Community Living honours volunteers By Roberta Walker GRAND BEND - The Communi- ty,Living Association of South Hu- ron held their annual Christmas banquet on Thursday, at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter. The Association's Social Com- mittee cooked and served over 300 turkey dinners to the clients and their families, staff and volunteers who support the agency. Members of the Exeter High School Band and Choir, led by Bob Robilliard performed a short Christ- mas music program before dinner, and were invited to share the ban- quet afterwards. C.L.S.H. Association President Roberta Walker welcomed every- one and introduced Rev. Cardell Parsons, the Associate Pastor of Exeter United Church. Rev. Par- sons shared a Christmas message with the audience, about an empty trunk - to the owner, the trunk was full of clouds, sunshine and memo- ries; to others the trunk was empty. Is the glass half -full or half -empty? Do we take the opportunities as. they come and act .on them, or do we fail to recognize the chance to make a real difference? The choice Exeter Drop-in EXETER - Three games were played in carpet bowling: Muriel Marshall 2 wins, score 31 Marshall Dearing 2 wins, score 29 Ray Smith 2 wins, score 26 Cribbage Stewart Blackwell was high scor- er with 814 points and Helen Was- nidge won the consolation prize. Community Bible church ELGINFIELD - Community Bible Church on Highway #7 and AdelaideSt. has for many years of- fered the community a special way to celebrate the Christmas season with excellent musical and dramat- ic presentations. Last year, many will remember the drama, "Rip Van Christmas" featuring child ac- tors and a children's choir. This year, a large adult choir un- der the direction of Mrs. Debbie Grigg is eager to sing the songs of Christmas new and old. Tim Browning has worked with 17 adults, young people and children to ready a drama as part of the can- tata. The dramatic material helps carry the theme of the cantata - "The Majesty and Glory of Christ- mas". A new addition to the church was officially opened last May en- larging seating capacity to 400. It is still a good idea to come early for a good seat, though. "The Ma- jesty and Glory of Christmas" will be presented on two nights: Satur- day. December 12. and Sunday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Nursery care will be provided and refresh- ments will follow. is ours. After the meal, members of the Exeter Girl Guides cleared the ta- bles, while Walker and Harry Klun- gel led the audience in a carol sing, with music provided by the Thames Road Musical Guild. As part of the Christmas program this year, the Board of Directors took the opporu- nity to formally recognize the valu- able contributions of staff and vol- unteers. Without their dedication and loyal service on behalf of those people in the community who need extra support - the sons and daugh- ters, brothers, sisters and friends - this agency would be unable to pro- vide the quality of support present- ly available. Walker reaffirmed their commitment to work together and improve person -centred care in the future. • Executive director John Gray pre- sented tokens of stafi recognition - agency pins to all those who had worked for 2 to 4 years and agency logo -sweatshirts to all personnel who had worked from 5 to 9 years. Those staff members who had worked longer than 10 years for this agency received a special watch with the association logo, presented to 12 people. A total of 57 staff members re- ceived some token of recognition, reflecting the kind of loyal support this agency has benefited from over the past 25 years. Walker presented two volunteer recognition awards for outstanding contributions. One was given Agnes Aunger for 12 years with Occupational Services, on the bake shop committee, admissions, and the 1990 community involvement program (C.I.P.) Peter Becker re- ceived an award for his time and talent in the researching and pur- chase of softeware and computers for both offices and use by consu- mers, including assistive device adaption, installation and trouble shooting. He also donated a hand- crafted cedar chest as a door prize for an Association fund raiser. The contributions of these two - people show the wide range of pos- sibilities when a volunteer is asked to donate their time and talent, needed now more than ever by the community. The Friendship Group, made up of consumers friends and family, performed several musical num- bers. This non -denominational church group supports a large num- ber of people, meeting on a weekly basis to share Bible teaching, songs, stories and friendship. After the program, everyone got the chance to dance to the music of Pe- ter Snell and his band, a great way to complete the evening in a com- munity party. Roberta Walker and Harry Klungel lead the audience in a car- ol sing during Thursday's Community Living Christmas ban- quet. Saintsbury by H.
