Forests available
for public enjoyment
EXETER - Outdoors enthusiasts
looking to expand their horizons
this winter will be interested to
learn that the Ausable-Bayfield
Conservation Authority has -even
more to offer than its conservation
areas and management areas.
Agreement forests, located through-
out the watershed, add up to almost
5,000 acres of trails and witdemess
- all open to the public and free of
charge.
A wide variety of 'low -intensity
outdoor recreational experiences'
are permitted, depending on suita-
bility and conditions at individual
agreement forests. Hunting; for ex-
ample, is allowed at all of the loca-
tions. Other activities include fish-
ing, trapping, hiking, snowshoeing,
cross-country skiing, snowmobil-
ing, horseback riding, picnicking
and nature study.
Agreement forests represent a
partnership, formed more than 40
years ago, between the Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority
which owns thc_.properties and the
Ministry of Natural Resources
which manages them. The agree-
ment states that the mutual goal of
the two agencies is "to provide... a
continuing combination of resource
oevelopment (including provision
of adequate vegetation cover to aid
in flood protection and prevent soil
erosion), outdoor education and
recreation, and quality environ-
ment."
John Schwindt, Extension Servic-
es Manager with the ARCA, points
out that this partnership extends to
such special interest groups as Hen -
salts Pineridge Snowmobile Club,
whose members groom trails at the
agreement forest in Hay Swamp.
"There used to be grants to help
pay the costs involved, but there
haven't been any funds available
for a few years now," said
Schwindt. "If it weren't for the
Pineridge Snowmobile Club and
their hard work, there -wouldn't be
trails for Hay Swamp."
People interested in snowmobil-
ing at the Hay Swamp site are en-
couraged to request details about
the ABCA's property boundaries:

LONDON - The Grand Theatre's
Chrisunas gift to London will be
unwrapped in just a few days when
A Christmas Carol, by Mayor
Moore, opens on December 4. This
lively musical based on the novel
by Charles Dickens stars William
Hutt, Ellen Horst, Peter Huu, Barry
MacGregor, Brigitte Robinson, Jan
Alexandra Smith, Jonathan Whit-
taker and Eric Woolfe. Miles Potter
directs, with musical direction by
Stephen Woodjetts and choreogra-
phy by Valerie Moore.
This spirited musical of A Christ-
mas Carol is the classic tale of the
miraculous transformation of grasp-
ing old skinflint Ebenezer Scrooge
into a beloved man of warmth and
kindness following his Chrisunas
Eve visits by the Ghosts of Christ-
mas Past, Christmas Present and
Christmas Yet to Come.
Leading the cast is William Hutt
as the miserly Scrooge. Joining him
from the cast of The Dining Room
will be Peter Hutt, Brigitte Robin-
son, Jan Alexandra Smith and Jona-
than Whittaker. A Chrisunas Carol
marks the return to London of such
familiar faces as renowned Shaw
and Stratford Festival performer
Barry MacGregor, whose previous

and The Doctor's Dilemma; and
Enc Woolfc, fondly remembered
by Grand audiences as Eugene in
both Biloxi Blues and Brighton
Beach Memoirs.

Christmas Carol runs from Decem-
ber 1-30, with matinees on
Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The Saturday, December 26 Box-

While they are open to the puhlic

tion, the agreement forests are also
under the care of the MNR, whose
staff carefully maintain and manage
every acre despite annual budget
reductions.
"Access laneways, shared by both
groups, arc vital," said Schwindt.
"They allow Ministry staff to con-
duct their management activities
and to deal with emergencies. We
appreciate responsible use of access
