Irish take advantage of Hawks struggling defence
By Fred Groves,

LUCAN - If the Exeter Hawks
want to be successful this season,
they are going to have to improve
on their defense.
Wednesday night, the Lucan
Irish beat the visiting Exeter
Hawks 8-4 in OHA Development
League hockey action.
For the most part, the Irish had
little difficulty breezing by the
Hawks' defensemen. Numbers are
beginning to show Exeter may
need some help back on the blue -
line.
After the game, the Hawks had
71 goals bored against them, third
in the division only behind the
newlyformed Northmiddlesex
Stars and the Seaforth Centenaires.
"Our defence is doing too much
second guessing. They're getting
caught flat-footed," said Exeter
coach George Pratt.
In just the second meeting of the
big rivalry between the Hawks and
the Irish (Lucan won 8 -2 -back on
Oct. 16), the Irish came out quick
and it was 1-0 when Aitdy Ross
put one up high on Hawks' net -
minder Kirk Durand.
Durand, playing with an injured
knee, allowed all eight goals before
giving way to Clint McCann who
looked solid and did not allow a
goal in the 33 minutes he played.
Lucan built a 3-1 lead but the
Hawks closed the gap less than 30
seconds into the middle period
when Todd McCann jumped on a
rebound and made it 3-2.
But Lucan forward Greg DePrest
flew down the wing and scored a
shorthanded marker and then with
the Irish just returning to full
strength, Steve Moore scored on a
long breakaway which once again
caught the Hawks' defence out of
position.
"I thought the turning point of the
game was the shorthanded goal, we
had the momentum," said Pratt.
Exeter's blueline corps was di-
minished numbers wise when both
Jamie Cornish and Jason McBride
were ejected for fighting.
But surprisingly, the visitors
played very well in the third period
and outscored -the Irish 1-0 in the fi-
nal 20 minutes.
Despite winning their 12th game
of the year and fourth straight, Irish
coach Ken Needam admitted he's
not getting a balanced scoring at-
tack.
Wednesday night, DePrest had
.three goals. Moore netted a pair
with singles from Ross, Jim Stanton

the second period, Bonnie West-
lake and Yvonne Wells. Goalie

and Steve Snider. It was just Snid-
er's second goal of the season as the
veteran, along with Chris Haskett
who the Irish expected a high goal
production from, are struggling.
"If you're only going to get it
(scoring) out of one, you're in trou-
ble," said Needham.
Following the game, DePrest had
33 points while Moore had 20.
""If he's not there maybe the oth-
ers will work harder," added Need-
ham.
Although the Hawks were beaten,
they did show signs of tough, ag-
gressive hockey at times.
Veteran forward Shayne Robin-
son continues to be a hard-working
forechecker and it's paying off as he
helped set up three of the Hawks
four goals.
Captain Paul Manders is also
dishing out some solid checks.
"lt's the key to our success," said
Prau.
Sean McCann had two goals for
the Hawks with one each to Todd
McCann and Nick Szabo.
Hawks 7_ Lancers 3
This game was a bit out of the
ordinary.
Exeter led 5-0 at the end of the
first period but what was surprising
is they 'scored all five goals in a
span of about four -and -a -half min-
utes.
Leading the scoring attack was
Dan Ryan with a pair of goals in
the quick outburst, with one each
from Jamie Cornish, Paul Manders
and Andrew Barton.
Manders added another one, this
time shorthanded in the second pe-
riod while Todd McCann netted
one in the third. •Clint McCann
went the distance in goal for the
Hawks.
Referee Dave Belling was in-
jured in the first period Bothe offi-
cials had to work a two-man sys-
tem..
The win lifted the Hawks record
to 9-6.

scoring for the Irish. DePrest had
five points on the night.
