EXETER - Bill Bourne was real
mad Sunday night.
The manager of the Strathroy
Sharks, threw a water bottle on the
ice, smashed a stick in front of ref-
eree Dave Whaley after the game
and in the hallway of the South Hu-
ron Recreation Centre, knocked
over a" garbage can spilling trash all
over the floor.
Bourne was reacting to what he
thought should be a. penalty against
Exeter Mohawks' defenseman Ron
Elliott who speared Shawn Resume
after the Sharks' forward buried his
stick into Elliou's stomach.
Exeter won the Senior 'A' hockey
game 7-4 and with Saturday's big
loss to Petrolia are now 7-2.
While Bourne caught the atten-
tion of all after the game, it -was
Mohawks' speedy centre Tim
Shields who put on a show during
the regular 6u minutes.
Playing in his first game of the
year, Shields scored two goals -and
set up two more.
He has been off because of an in-
juredAknee which, with therapy -is
working itself back into fine form
which the Mohawks are very glad
l to see.
"I felt slow, I felt really slow. I
haven't played in so long and I felt
rusty," said Shields.
He's supposed to be wearing a
brace and has been cautioned -by
his doctor to take it easy.
Exeter coach -general manager
Dave Revington signed Shields
moments before Sunday's game
and with the lack of bodies the Mo-
hawks have had, Shields will be
well utilized.
"We've been waiting for Tim.
He's had some knee problems and
he's been taking therapy.. He's stays
in good shape. We're looking for-
ward to having him back full-
time," said Revington.

Shields logged some time with
high -scoring Rob Kingshou cad
-the two make for one of the fastest
duos in the league.
"He's a good player. He gets out
in the open and you can feed him,"
said Shields.
It was Kingshott who scored the
game's first goal when he took a
pass from behind the net from Joe
Scherer who had one goal and two
_assists on the night.
Also scoring for the winners
were defenseman Corie McKee
and veteran Greg Snyder who -tired
two tallies and set up two more.
Answering for the visiting Sharks
were Steve Moffatt with two, Dean
Schram and Scou Rachuk. The
score was tied 1-1 after the fust pe-
riod and it was 3-2 for the hosts af-
ter 40 minutes.
McKee, the rookie on the blue -
line has been a pleasant surprise for
the defending provincial champion
Mohawks.
"He jumps into the play very well
• and he can lug (carry) the puck.
Pie's a pleasant surprise," said-Rev-
ington.

Saturday, in their worst game of
• the season thus far, Exeter trailed
4-1 at'the end of the first period and
Petrolia just kept filling the net on
Mohawks' goalies Jeff Hill and
then Trevor Hunter.
"We had the fewest players we've
ever had, .we only had ten skaters,"
said Revington. "We were half _an
hour late and we didn't come pre-

Checking -from -behind. '
My own personal •lbellu g is b
that the penalty they inflict Fred
upon the player doing this (; roves
should be common in all lev-
els of hockey.
The Ontario Hockey Association has not been as hard-
wood on their players as the Ontario Minor Hockey ASsoeia-
don and perhaps they should be.
I was at a recent hockey game in Parkhill ht which Clint
McCann, who is from that community but plays for the Exet-
er Junior D. Hawks, was checked -from -behind, injuring his
shoulder and forcing him out of the game.
The player who hit McCann was given a two -minute minor
for the actual collision and 10 more minutes because of the
severity which caused the injury.
If that was a minor hockey game, the player would have
been given a five-minute major in which someone would
have to sit in the penalty box for him because he would be
ejected.
The OHA and the OMHA are in constant turmoil now what
with the possibility of the OMHA taking over the OHA. As
much as I shudder at the thought, this is one area where the
OMHA could have some influence on the OHA to tighten up
on their enforcement. -
"I think, they think we're more responsible," said Lucan
Irish assistant coach Jamie Pearce.
Junior 'D' hockey may be of a higher calibre then say mid-
get but a lot of the players are the same age (16-17) and I
question on whether or not they are more responsible.
Checking -from -behind is quickly becoming a high risk of
injury and that's why the referees are keeping a close watch
on it.
But there is a lot of discrepancy surrounding officials
when they make this call. And it is a tough one to make.
Some players, when they know they are going m be hit in
the comer, try and tum their bodies and purposely draw the
opposition into taking the checking -from -behind penalty.
That doesn't happen too often but referees should be aware
that it is happening.
The OMHA currently have a rule which states if the player
hits -from -behind in the third period, he does not play the next
game. It's a good rule and should be enforced in the OHA as
well.
But the local Shamrock Hockey League and the Lambton-
Middlesex Hockey League have stepped this up by adding an-
other game suspension.
It may make the player think twice about checking -from -
behind but a lot of times, as already mentioned some of the
calls are questionable and referees are simply trying to cover
their butts. Not that I blame them.
Mel Unruh of British Columbia was recently awarded near-
ly S4 million from the Supreme Court as a -result of a hit -
from -behind in 1990 which left him paralized.
The judge said the player who hit Unruh dealt out a reckless
alatbougittless check but he said it was not vicious.
I moaatfly'received a letter fa:malie Soldat}..a.mhrwflieeh-
ey coachin Exeter and long-time Cutler Senior 'A' Mo-
hawks.
He pointed out that referees in the Lambton-Middlesex
League are warned to call hits -from -behind as major penal-
ties. Soldan added that referees are also threatened that inju-
ries occurring during the game they are officiating could re-
sult in civil suits against them.
Therefore, the inexperienced referees are going to call more
penalties and call questionable incidences because of the
threat.
In minor hockey, any coach whose team receives more than
36 minutes in penalties, must sit out the "next game. It may be
the fault of some coaches their players are penalty -prone, but
-when officials start handing out penalties at a high frequency,
they should be lifting.the limit on coaches.
Itmay sound like I am griping at officials but it's some of
.the judgemenc .they make. Andlike anythingelse in this
world there are good referees and there are bad ones.
