I1,1rTCl-i1i1 - Despiu; not winning the Huron -Perth senior boys' volley-
ball championship, the South Huron District High School Panthers, feel
they have met their goal.
"We've met our goal, we're going to WOSSA,' said coach Scou Halpen-
ny.
Art.Mitcbcll on Thursday, the Panthers .f ished second in the 'AA' pool
behind StpufardCentral,-therderolsecuringra berth at the Western Ontario
tournament this weekend.
South Huron started Thursday's tournament with wins of 15-7 and 15-5
over Stratford Northwestern and then beat Goderich 15-9 and 15-4.
However, in their third pool matchup, the Panthers were beaten 15-11
and 15-7 to Stratford Central. After that, they fell 15-1 and 15-8 to Strat-
ford St. Mike's.
"1 think the guys were a little out of it, they had just played Central,"
said Halpenny of the conference semi-final Toss to St. Mike's.
South Huron played much better in the second game against -St. Mike's,
as the breaks went their way and they led 8-7. But SL Mike's came back
strong, rattling off eight straight points.
"We're still a young team. We've played better." said Halpenny who has
only three graduating players.
In junior Huron -Perth action at Mitchell, the Panthers struggled and did
not get out of pool play.

Mohawks double B's,
INGERSOLL - There may not have been a lot of players. for either
team, but there certainly were a lot of goals.
Sunday night, the Exeter Mohawks travelled to Ingersoll where they
easily defeated the B's 14-7. Exeter iced just 12 skaters while the B's,
had only 10.
The last time the two teams met, back on Nov. 1 in Exeter, the B's
showed up with only seven skaters and lost 15-3.
With the win, the Mohawks now have a 6-1 record, one point behind
the Aylmer Hornets in the Southern Senior !A' League.
In Ingersoll, the visitors jumped into a quick 4-1 lead at the end of
the first period before the B's came on strong in the second and it was
8-6 after 40 minutes.
The Mohawks special teams worked well again as they had three
powerplay goals and Richard Hawkins popped a shorthanded marker.
Last year's league leading scorer Joe Scherer led the winners with
three goals and four assists for a big seven -point night while Rob King-
shott had three goals and an assist. Hawkins added a pair with singles
from Kevin McArter, Corie McKee, Paul Barton, Dale Gibbon and
Greg Snyder.
Forward Gard Brooks and defensemen Chet Couture had strong
games as they each helped set up four goals.
Mohawks' aronunts:__After seven league games. Kingshott and (11-
17-28) and Scherer (18-10-28) lead the Mohawks' in scoring while
Brooks is close behind (8-17-25),.,Goaliie Jeff Hill has a 4.00 goals
against average while his partner, rookie Trevor Hunter is at 5.67.

Junior hoopers take undefeated record
into Huron Conference semi -mals
By Fred Groves

EXETER - The 1992 girls bas-
ketball season will no doubt be
looked upon as a successful one for
the South Huron District High
School Panthers.
After a total of 23 regular season
games in the Huron Conference,
the Panthers have won 21 games
while losing just twice. The juniors
head the way with an outstanding
8-0 record, the midgets who won
the Huron title last week were 7-0,
while the much improved senior
squad finished at 6-2.
Friday afternoon at South Huron,
the juniors easily beat Clinton's
Central Huron Redmen 44-28.
Panthers' junior coach Pat Rowe
said part of the success of her team
this year has come with the fact
that three of her players, Jenny
Romphf, Candace Miller and
Christine Mclnnes are playing their
third year of high school ball.
"I've got some third year players.
The last two years the junior team
has been right out of midget," said
Rowe.
The juniors have also got the ma-
turity of Andrea Mason and Cara
Pepper who, like the other three arc
also in Grade 11. That, combined
with the speed of point guard
Heather Davies and the hustle of
Karey Youmans, makes this a well-
balanced team
"Sometimes you get a group that
gels on -and -off the court. It
doesn't itappcir ver) -Attu," said
Rowe.
Miller and Mclnnes led the scor-
ing against the Redmen on Friday
as they had 14 and 10 points re-
spectively.
It took South Huron over two
minutes to score in the fust quarter
but once they did, some quick pass-
es, alert defensive play and overall
aggressiveness saw them build a
20-8 lead after eight minutes and it
was 26-10 at halftime.
One of the nicest plays of the
game came with just seven seconds
left when Romphf made a nice pass
to Katherine Hem.
The junior Panthers will host
Wingham's Madhill in the Huron
Conference semi-finals today
(Wednesday) and if they win, the
finals will also be held at South
Huron on Friday.
This year, for the first time, bas-
ketball has been split into a Huron
and Perth Conference. None of the
other sports have done this.
"At the Huron -Perth meeting. the
basketball coaches agreed to disa-
gree," said Rowe.
So this year, there will be a Hu-
ron and a Penh champion in the
junior and senior divisions, each
will gain a trip to the WOSSA tour-
nament.
Rowe explained the reason for
the breaking up of the two confer-
ences was that there was some con-
cern by the Boards of Education
about the time away teacher -
coaches were spending from the
classroom.
Seniors win big: Sparked by
the leadership and 15 -point perfor-
mance by veteran guard Stacey
Rader, the senior Panthers won
their sixth of the year, a convincing
44-23 win over the Redmen.
South Huron seniors will play
host to Madhill on Wednesday in
one semi-final game while in the
other, undefeated Goderich Vikings
take on Seeforth. -
Rader had a three-point bomb
early in the game when she had lots
of time to get set and easily ripped
the mesh. The Panthers led 12-6 at
the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, they really
came to life, and scored eight
straight points which, at the time,
vaulted them into a 22-10 lead.
Amy Campbell had a great game
as she had 11 points, all of them in
the second half including a three -
pointer.
Conference champs: Last Mon-
day at the final tournament in Sea -
forth, the midget Panthers led 26-
21 at the half but outplayed Sea -
forth much more in the second half
and won big, 64-48.
Helen Theophilopoulos led the
winners with 24 points. The win
put South Huron against Goderich
who had eliminated Central Huron.
In the final, the Panthers went in
with a great desire to win and out-
scored the Vikings 20-14 in the
first half before going on to a 52-36
victory.
Jessie Brown led the way with 15
points while Theophilopoulos add-
ed 10. Peggy Brownlee did a good
job grabbing several key rebounds.
