EXETER - What a great finish to
a great tournament.
Sunday night at the South Huron
Recreation Centre in Exeter, Ilder-
ton doubled Ridgetown 4-2 to win
the peewee division of the Bill Bat-
ten Memorial Minor Hockey Tour-
nament.
Although it was somewhat of a
disappointing tournament for the
three hosting teams as they failed
to make it to either the 'A' or B' fi-
nals, the championship games nev-
ertheless were still exciting and
provided for some great hockey.
Ridgetown was considered the
favourite to win the peewee title
but Ilderton surprised a lot of peo-
ple and it was a very close contest
throughout.
The Exeter Peewee Legions won
their first game, 3-2 over Mitchell.
There was no scoring in the first
period of this game but midway
through the second frame, Exeter's
Dave Farquhar scored and with just
12 seconds left in the period, Brian
Parsons connected.

With only 26 seconds left in the
game, the drama continued as 13xet-
er's Chad Dalrymple scored on a
long shot.
After that win, the locals went in
to the 'A' semi-final against the
eventual tournament champions 11-
derton but were eliminated follow-
ing a 3 -2 -loss.
Parsons and Dalrymple scored
for Exeter and it looked as though
they would win it when it looked
as though they scored again with
36 seconds left in the game.
But the goal was disallowed be-
cause a player was in the crease.
That upset the Exeter coaches
which saw them given a bench mi-
nor. The game went into overtime
where Ilderton quickly scored on
the powerplay.
Atom division
The Stephen Township Nasty
Boys' atoms were the best local
team m the tournament as they
made it to the 'B' final where they
lost 4-3 in overtime to Wheatley
Legion.

So I'm on the 401 driving from Mississauga to Chatham to drop the puck
for the CHATHAM WHEELS, a brand new team in the Colonial Hockey
League. The BLUE JAYS pregame show is on, awaiting die game for the
AL East Championship, and I gave up my tickets to drive to Chatham for
hockey game. I'm saying to myself "What a Dummy I am!" "There's going
to be nobody these, everyone's home watching the Jaya or at the ball game."
At 7 pm. as fm pulling into the parking lot of the arena, the young atten-
dant say's they have a parking spot for you Grapes. in the beck. I back into
the spot (for a quick exit) and in I go. I'm rushed in the General Manna's
roosn, RON CARON's office, I sit dowwaotl-begin signing autographs' until •
it's time to meat the WHEELS team. young guys who love the game and
are playing it not for money but because they love it
The teams skate onto the ice and I'm introduced. I march up the tunnel to
be introduced and the place is jammed "Gee. it can't be happening" I say to
myself, "don't they know the Jays are on TV? I just can't believe that 3,600
people would stay home and not watch the Blue Jays. As I walk onto the ice
the playas are slapping their sticks on the ice. I love those guys. I'm an-
nounced and I say a few words about BLUE and while the NATIONAL
ANTHEM is being played a funny feeling came over me "this is CANA-
DA!" If only the politicians could see this. Nevermind the protesters, the
whiners, the minorities who are complaining, and those who expect hand-
outs, here are people who paid 10 dollars just to See minor pro hockey be-
cause they like the players, they love CANADA and I thought "look how
wrong those people were when they kidded me about driving 3 hours to a
hockey game when I could be home in TORONTO watching the ballgame
in the DOME". I wouldn't have wanted to be in any other spot in the world.
This was CANADA at it's best.
Nevennind the STANLEY CUP FINALS with their diving and crying,
all their millions, this was hockey and I was proud to be part of it.
I'm worried about hockey. Hockey as we know it is as thing of the past.
For example, let's take the WHEELS same that I attended in Chatham. It
was the opening night of the first game and the crowd is pumped, the
players are pumped and electricity is in the air. "Let's play hockey. drop the
puck, let's get going!" And what happens? BANG... PENALTY, BANG...
PENALTY, BANG... PENALTY. Thirteen penalties were called in the
fust period and it ruined the flow of the game. Killing penalties and power
plays were all we saw and the crowd was out of the game and it was boring
hockey.
Too bad, because this crowd was ready. Listen. I'm the first guy to say
we have to have the sticks down, but this is ridiculous. They are trying to'
change things too fast and people are literally walking out of the games.
Lets hope it changes for the CHATHAM WHEELS and the rest of the
COLONIAL LEAGUE and that some sanity Domes into play. Let the
playas play the game and don't take the game away from them. Just that
night I know that the owners were ticked -off, I was ticked -off, the coaches,
everybody including the crowd who were really ticked off. But a few bleed-
ing hearts will say "it must be done" BUT FOR WHO?? If the players and
the farts don't want it, what are they doing it for? I71 tell you, for who,
BRUCE McNALL and GIL STIEN, two
AMERICANS who want the game sani-
tized for US. TELEVISION CON-
TRACTS for Anaesican audiences. They
feel the gain is too violent for American
eyes. TOO VIOLENT??. are you kidding?
Americans love football where the object of
the game is to kill the quarterback every
Sunday afternoon. In fact 6 NFL ,quarter-
backs went out the fret two weeks of the
schedule.

close one. Brandon Fuller made it
1-0 for Wheatley in the first period
but Shawn Stuckless teamed with
Danny Mosurinjohn to get one
,back for the Nasty Boys.
Jeff Pinkbeiner made it 2-1 for
Stephen and it was 3-1 with just
6:30 left in the third period when
Adam Wilson converted a nice
pass from Finkbeiner.
But Wheatley came back and tied
it up, sending the game into over-
time where Rickey Segedin scored
after Derek Pugh bounced one off
the boards.
Stephen goalie BJ'Theophilopou-
los, who had an outstanding tourna-
ment, was not in net as both goalies
had been pulled in the overtime
format.
The Nasty Boys got to the final
after they beat Exeter Atom Bron-
cos 3-0 as Finkbeiner scored two
goals and Wilson got the other.

In their opener, Stephen lost 3-2
to Thedford as Wilson and JR Da-
vies scored for the Nasty Boys.
The Broncos lost their opener 5-1
to Mitchell as Chad Monteith
scored the lone Exeter goal.
Winning the 'A' final was Mitch-
ell who edged a tough Seaforth
team 5-4.
Greg Wolfcamp led the winners
with two goals with singles from
Tim Vosper, Rob Lealess and Matt
McGill. For Seaforth, Derek Nes-
bitt who was named the Atom
MVP for the tournament had two
goals with the other two for Ryan
VanDooren.
Novice division
Although it was a quick exit for
the Exeter Novice Waxers, they did
have something to celebrate.
Saturday morning, the Waxers
beat Seaforth 3-2 in overtime.
This was another exciting game
as Mike Kerslake and Matthew An-
stett scored for Exeter in regulation
time and then, in overtime, Craig
Overholt scored from Matt Die-
trich.
