Special teams come through as Mohawks win two games

EXETER - In football, special
teams can win or lose a game for
you.
Often, you don't think about spe-
cial teams in hockey and how
they'll perform.
But Sunday night at the South
Huron Recreation Centre, of the 13
goals scored in the Senior 'A' hock-
ey game, six of them came either
on the powerolay or shorthanded.
The host Exeter Mohawks man-
aged two shorthanded tallies as
they beat the Dorchester Dolphins
8-5, increasing their record to a
comfortable 5-1.
Despite having just 11 skaters in
Walpole Island on Saturday, Exeter
won quite easily, 9-2.
Against the Dolphins, Joe Scher-
er had back-to-back shorthanded
goals in the second period and also
netted a powerplay marker.
Kevin McArter, back in his first
game since being injured in Strath-
roy on Oct. 28 had two goals with
one each from Dale Gibbon, Paul
Barton and Greg Snyder.
"I got kneed in Strathroy by Mary
Rutledge after the whistle. 1 twisted
something," said McArter.
Before Sunday's game, McArter,
methodically taped a lucky penny
to the top of his left sock, he's says
it may be a bit superstitious but it
has proved lucky so far.
"I found a penny in the dressing
room in Dunnville last year and we
won that game. (Game Four of the
playoffs). 1 didn't put it on in Game
Five and we lost," he said. The Mo-
hawks won the next game and the
series and eventually the OHA
championship.
Although they had played just the
night before with only 11 skaters,
the Mohawks came out quick
against Dorchester. McArter, King -
shot and Barry Baynham all had
good chances but Kevin Cole came
up big.
"Against Dorchester, we have to
generate a lot of offence to beat
Cole, he's an outstanding goalie,"
said Exeter coach Dave Revington.
He's used to a lot of shots. We have
to get to him early."
At 3:50 Barton took a pass from
Kingshot and bounced it off of
someone and into the net for the
fust game's goal and just 14 sec-
onds into a Dorchester penalty,
Scherer drilled one from the slot.
This game was a rough one and
in the opening period, Scott Cole
shoved Exeter's Gord Brooks
against the boards and ripped his
helmet off and Barton received a
deep gash in his lip from Jean Marc
Loiselle.
In the third, tempers flared and

over Larry Aransabia.
Kaak fought Talbot back in May
in Talbot's hometown of Ajax and
clic judges awarded the fight to Tal-
bot.
"1 rocked him four times," said
Kaak of the fight in May. "I
couldn't finish him off. He hung on
with wobbly legs and it went on to
win it in a 15-8 count."
In that fight, Kaak said Talbot

Exeter's Ron Elliott and Howard
Hunt were given game misconducts
for fighting. That put the Mohawks
down to three defcncemcn, Bayn-
ham, Chet Couture and rookie Co-
rie McKee.
The trio seemed to be able to get
the job done for the last nine min-
utes of the game.
"We're playing with four or five
defcnsemen every game, condition-
ing is starting to come around.
They know in a situation like that,
that they can't handle the puck as
much," said Revington. -
Quinn McKnight scored twice for
the visitors with the others from
Scou .Cole, Tim Duff and Hunt
scored when Exeter had a two-man
advantage.
Hunt came down along the wing
and let go with a long low shot
which caught Exeter goalie Trevor
Hunter way off guard.
"He's a first-year goalie and it
was only his third start," said Rev-
ington. He's got to learn and he just
needs more work."

On Saturday, half way through
the second round, Kaak won the
provincial title.
"He just went down. It wasn't a
one punch knockout, it was combi-
nations.'
Kaak, who had to skip two hours
before the fight to get his weight
down a couple of kilograms to
make the class, will now take some
time off before heading to Prince
Edward Island for the nationals on
Dec. 3-5.
