ZURICH - The Huron County Speak! O1yn pics are off and rolling now
into the third week of their winter bowNng'ptogram.
The perm is operated by volunteers and is held at the Ttfwn and
Country Bowling Lanes in Zurich every Wednesday evening beginning at
6:30.
Twenty-two enthusiastic bowlers are registered in the six-week activity
which continues until November 25. It is the second year for the event
which breaks for winter, but resumes in the spring.
"Everyone seems -to love it," said volunteer. Sue Nigh, "And we have
some very good bowlers out here."
According to Nigh, Special Olympics has been a limited program over
the past few years in Huron County,'involving bowling and figure skating.
Steps are now being taken to offbr4tdditional fields such as swimming,
weightlifting and powerlifting.
Nigh, who works for Community Living South Huron, became involved
in Humn County Special Olympics and the bowling program after work-
ing with Elsie Swan who has done very well in figure skating, and will be
competing at the world level in Austria conte March.
At this moment, howlers compete only locally, bort in April there is a re-
gional meet which qualifies the athletes for the provincial level. From
there, they may progress as Swan did to the Canadian Special Olympics
and -.family -the internationals.
"But that's a long-term goal," agreed Nigh. -"Right now we're here to
peat start
have len and develop . , s."
Nigh believes that • it's fen for the athletes to compete against erre
8nfther and beat each • , itis much more important that the competi-
tors better themselves. • - - -
wWe have awards atte end r year for the MVPs, but there are 'also
awards for those who put'lorth a lot of effon," said Nigh.
Athletes may receive fecognition for various aspects of competition
which include most spirit and the infamous gutterhall award.
Most of the athletes who take pari in the bowling league hail from 'the
Exeter area, becanse there is a league in Clinton and another is being yet
-up inGoderich. - ---_- • _ -
"We're trying to set up programs in each area to prevent the -king dis-
tance travel, said'Nigh."
As a result of the travel, volunteers are always welcome to participate
Wednesday evenings to help provide transportation. Currently there are
four volunteers in the bowling program who drive and aid in scoring.
Volunteers bowl as well, which makes the activity much more fun and
helps to build a better relationship for the competitors.
Nigh also commends the help of Town and Country Lanes' proprietor
Tony Bedard, who has always offered outstanding support for such pro-
grams.
"Tony -is just excellent, and always willing to help us in any way."
Anyone interested in volunteering or in a night of bowling can contact
Sue Nigh at 235-1295. '
