That was the case with Gord of the Exeter Mohawks y night. In Trout of a disappointing open- ing night crowd, the veteran for - •ward scored one goal and set up four more in an 8-6 loss to the vis- iting Aylmer Hornets. 'The 42 -year-old Brooks, now in his fifth season with the Senior 'A' team, was going to be an assistant to coach -general manager Dave Revington this year. "I'd like to work with Dave be- hind 'the bench but when you're short of bodies like that, you can't till it down.'Bythe Iook4 ofthittgs right now, Tin going to be playing for a while," staid Breaks. Although the Mohawks did dress 17 players for the r, the pre- season numbers a4 high. Revie gton tsai fere be a little while yet before he has an entire team to work with-bn-a tegularba- sis. "We have some guys busy with work and some who don't know if they want to make a commitment. It takes three weeks to a month into the season to lengthen the bench," said Revington. Brooks got his first tally of the regular season at the 2:54 point of the opening period, giving the Cord Brooks ...five -point night Irish top Cents. 11-5 Not real pretty, but still a win By Fred Groves T -A staff LUCAN - You would expect a game between two undefeated teams to be exciting, but this one wasn't. Seaforth Centenaires travelled to Lucan on Wednesday night and af- ter 60 minutes, the Irish remained the only undefeated team in the OHA Junior Development west di- vision, beating the Cents 11-5. This was not a pretty game, the kind you can reflect on and remem- ber for the rest of the series, this was u ly. "I didn't think it was ever going to end," said Lucan coach Ken Needham. For a time span of 1:09 in the first period there was no defence by either team as there were four goals scored. "It wasn't a very defensive game," said Lucan veteran bluelin- er Ed Vankerkoerlc. He had his best offensive game of the early season, blasting three goals past the Seaforth netminders Scott Wildgustand Jason Pethick. VanKerkoerle had five goals in the first-6vegames. There were nine powerplay goals scored in Wednesday's game. six of them by the Irish. - "It could be because .they didn't put much pressure on the. defence. They let us take the shots," said VanKerkoerle. Also scoring for the winners were Greg DePrest who had a big five- point night as he helped set up four goals, Andy Ross, Jeff Stanton, Derek Greenlee, Jim Stan- ton, Steve Moore, Travis Love and Jason Reidhead. Needham said he was pleased * with the way his team was able to capitalize with the man advantage. "We've been working on it (pow- erplay), not a great deal, but some." This was a very long game, not only with the many stops in play to report the 16 goals scored, but there were a lot of penalties as well. Lucan took 42 minutes in'mi- nors, defenceman Kevin Letich who was -later ejected for three stick•penahies had five minors and goalie Eoin Mclnemey was given a four -minute spearing penalty when he tried to clear his crease. Seaford' also took a lot of penal- ties and VanKerkoerle said it cer- tainly didn't hurt the Irish. Played at the Hensall Arena, Morgan scored two goals in a 10-1 victory. "They were trying to run guys and they were taking themselves out of position. Maybe that's why we got so many shots." In the first period, it took just 2:54 into the game for Ross and rookie Chris Haskeu to team up and at 9:13 it was 2-0 as DcPrest connected and just 57 seconds later Reidhead got his second of •the year. But the visitors quickly closed the gap and made it 3-2 when McI- nerney made a big pad save on Mike Devereaux but Boyd Dever- eaux was there to pounce on the re- bound. Jason McNichol watched as two Irish piayers collided and then trickled one in. Jeff Stanton scored to give the Irish a two -goal cushion but McNichol then waltzed around everyone and beat McInerney again. "Two or three times the guy went in untouched," said Needham of McNichol. There's nobody good enough in this league to do that," he said of his team's poor defensive play. i iiran have signed centre Jason McLeod .and .he will be replacing Paul O'Shea temporarily as O'Shea was in a recent car accident and in- jured his shoulder. Brooks, a former American Hockey League scoring champ, had three assists in the Mohawks pre- season. After Sunday's game he said he has tried to keep in shape over the summer. "I get in shape faster playing games rather than a training camp. The more you play, the better you feet and the better you get," he said. Referee, Rick Singleton whistled ottr pier only five penalties but one bf them hurt the Mohawks as'John efidrne cored what proved to be the win- ner with Exeter's Joe Scherer in the box for elbowing. In the third period the Mohawks had a two-man advantage fbr 47 seconds but they could not capital- ize. Aylmer led 3-2 after the opening period as Exeter had a lot of troubk in front of rookie goalie Trevor Hunter. With just five defensemen, two of them newcomers, they let in three soft goals. "When you speak of defence, you talk of team defence it takes five guys," said Revington. They got a tot of cheap goals. They were in front of our net far too long."
