Junior Hawks on a tear
-By Fred Groves

EXETER - After winning just
two of their first three games, the
Exeter Hawks went on a tear this
week, chalking up three straight
victories in OAA Development
League play.
Last Tuesday night, the Hawks
beat visiting Alvinston 7-3, Friday
at home they hammered the Bel-
mont Pests 13-0 and on Sunday
travelled to Lambeth returning with
an 8-4 win over Lambeth.
"We started out mediocre," said
Hawks' coach George Pratt after
Friday's lopsided win.
Against the Pests, Exeter came
out flying and it was 6-0 after the
fust period. Although veteran
Shayne Robinson and rookie Sean
McCann each had two goals and
three assists to lead the attack, the
Hawks had a very balanced of-
fense.
Pratt did some line juggling,
breaking up his best line to date of
Robinson, Sean McCann and Dan
Irvine. Todd McCann has since
been put on a line with Sean
McCann and Robinson.
"Now we've got three balanced
lines that can all put the puck in the
net," said Pratt.
Paul Manders, Irvine, Robinson
and Sean McCann all had two each
with singles from Dan Ryan, Todd
McCann, Nick Szabo, Rob Hoff-
man and Andrew Barton.
Belmont goaltenders Chris Ungar
and Mau Wilson struggled and
changed places a couple of times.
"1 told them (Hawks') before, the
game that Belmont is young with
young goalies and that the first five
minutes would determine the out-
come of the game," said Pratt.
Exeter made it 2-0 by the 2:54
point of the opening faceoff and
just kept putting more rubber in the
net. Manders, who now.1taraeven
points and is the Hawks' captain for
the 1992-93 season, said changing
the lines around certainly has
helped his game.
"We had too many finesse
players on one line so we shook it
up. I was playing with guys who
could scare and I don't think I was
helping out," said Manders.
He said the big win against the
Pests was very important to help
lift the Hawks' spirits, which at
times earlier in the season had been
low.
"We were at a point, 3-3, where
we could go either way, a skid, or
start something going," he added.
After sitting out two games due
to a suspension, veteran goalie
Clint McCann came up big against
Alvinston and recorded his first
-'shutout of -the -season against the
Pests.
"I haven't felt that good in a
while, probably not since the
playoffs two years ago," said
McCann.
He gave his young defense a lot
of credit for Friday's win.
"They played really well in front
of me, you have to give them a lot
of credit."
Hawks S.i.ancers 4
In Lambeth Sunday night, Exeter
dominated in the first period as
they were up 4-1 but the Lancers
narrowed the gap and the visitors
held a slim 5-4 lead after 40 min-
utes.
But Lambeth did not score in the
final frame and the Hawks had their
fifth win of the season in the books.
Robinson and O'Hara had two
each with singles from Barton, Ir-
vine, Todd McCann and Ray Cou-
sineau.
JIawks 7. Flyers 3
Despite trailing 2-1 at the end of
the first period, the host Hawks
turned it on last Tuesday night and
won their third of the season.
Sean McCann led the way with
three goals and an assist while blue -
liner Nathan Blight, Todd McCann,
Rob Hoffman and John O'Hara also
scored.
JJawks happenings; Exeter has
only one game this week when they
host the Seaforth Centenaires at the
South Huron Recreation Centre at
8:30 p.m...After eight games, roo-
kie centre Sean McCann leads the
club in scoring with 11 goals and
10 assists while Robinson has 16
points and Barton 15 points....

performance against Belmont Friday night.

American journaflsts
are bashing Canadians
a agahtetIWt rt>m.
S
Or U.S.
against Canada.
The 19922 World
Series has set a lot of reoords,
Kelly Gruber going 0.23, the
fist World Series being
played In Canada and the
Blue Jays giving up the most
stolen bases in post -season
play.
All of that interesting information is going to be forgotten
by many baseball fans. But, what will be remembered is the
nation bashing done by the Americans.
I actually believed that when the U.S. Marines walked out
on to the field in Atlanta for Game Two, that it was a mistake
the Canadian Flag was upside down.
But what I don't buy for a minute, are all the jokes, ribs and
pokes at the Canadian people and how they maybe, (wink,
wink, nudge, nudge) should not be involved in the great
American past time.
You've all heard it, baseball, hotdogs and hockey
pucks
What gets my goat the most is the bashing we're taking
from the U.S. joumalists.
Last Tuesday night, just before the start of Game Three, a
TV reporter has to get his kicks in at us. I didn't write this
fools name down but I was quickly on the phone to my dad
and he wasn't overly pleased either.
This guy opens his story in a park, presumably in Toronto,
but if you were watching, one of the kids was in shortsleeves,
and throwing a baseball. Next thing you know, it's a hockey
puck they are playing catch with.
"I guess they don't get it," says this clown.
Then he does a spoof on him at customs and finally a shot
at the Queen of England. He pulls out some Canadian money,
and wants to know if the queen will call the clubhouse after
the Blue Jays win the World Series.
Yes, you dutz, in fact she is but the line could be tied up be-
cause Abraham Lincoln would be talking with the Braves'.
If I recall, there has been little said about the Pittsburgh
Penguins (an American based team), winning the Stanley
Cup. Heh, next time the Penguins, or any other American
team are in the hockey final let's do a skit about them.
Let's take an American hockey player, stand him in front of
a camera and throw baseballs at him. "I guess he wouldn't get
it, EH?"
interviewing Alfredo Griffin before a game and asking what
part of Canada he is from is another bonehead move by the
American journalism corps.
All these guys have got a players' list in front of them and
they know where they are from.
If you think about it, we should have the Latin media get a
hold of some of the American players and just point out that
the supreme players on the field are not from the good old
U.S. of A.
You have to give the Blue Jays Baseball Club a lot of credit
prior to the start of Game Three, they brought the Marines
.hack on.the fieldandihutspatiedAtranadian flag to make
amends. The RCMP in turn. carried the American flag, right
side up.
Well if the American media can bash the Canadians and
the Jays I guess I'll put in my two cents worth.
How about Jane, if I pray hard enough maybe they'll win,
Fonda -Turner and her husband Ted, do you want me to stay
awake for the whole game Turner?
I hoped Ted and his rich media buddies take a real good
look at the Sky Dome. If baseball is going to be dragged into
the late days of October, baseball should be played indoors,
although I still like the natural grass.
And what about the umpiring, are the Jays ever getting
hosed.

ade a great catch in centre field, they dou-

Saunders out at.se1And.
The replay showed he was out.
