'Bend Murder -Mystery dinner a smash hit
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - A group of sus-
picious looking characters entered
the Grand Bend Legion Hall on
Saturday evening. A vampire, pilot,
geisha girl and samuri warrior, An-
tony and Cleopatra, a cowboy and
dance hall girl, a pirate, several
gypsies and quite a few little red
devils joined a number of shady
looking people in bizarre and col-
ourful costumes for a murder mys-
tery dinner, hosted by Community
Living, South Huron.
The event was staged as a fund
raiser for the Association to raise
money for repairs and renovations
at ARC Industries and the group
homes which serve the develop-
mentally challenged people in our
community. Turnout for the affair
was not as great as hoped, due to
stiff competition from the World
Series game and several other
events taking place locally, but
those who attended had a marve-
lous time.
The play was written by Barbara
Wheeldon, to discover the murder-
er of Sir Reginald Baxter, who had
met an untimely death five years
earlier. Detective Inspector George
E.T. Smart interviewed a number
of suspects regarding their memo-
ries of the murder and their rela-
tionship with the deceased. Was it
Sir Reginald's crooked solicitor, the
drunken doctor, the doctor's adul-
terous wife, the Crampy younger sis-
ter? What do the chauffeur, the
housekeeper, the policeman and the
groundskeeper know?
Congratulations go to the cast -
Barbara Wheeldon, David Wheel-
-don, Carol MacKinnon and Carl
Zvonkin, and to members of the au-
dience who were questioned and
ad-libbed their parts so well.
Saturday's Murder Mystery Dinner in Grand Bend sponsored
by Community Living included draws for valuable. prizes. From
the left are Barbara Wheeldon who won a cedar chest donat-
ed by Becker Wood Products of Dashwood and Sharon
Romphf received a voucher for a week ' for two from "Ilison

Grand Bend
Women's
institute
meet
By Loreto Gilt
GRAND BEND - The Grand
Bend Women's Institute held their
meeting on Thursday. As the ladies
entered the room, they were inter-
ested in examining table after -table
of antique kitchen and household
gadgets.
President Donna Lovic opened
the meeting with the Institute Ode
and Mary Stewart Collect. Brenda
Love read the minutes of the Sep-
tember meeting. A variety of re-
sponses were given to answer the
roll call which was to name a mod-
ern kitchen tool that they use.
Members also reported their volun-
teer hours .:,r the previous month
and the treasurer's report was given.
Lovie conducted the business.
Fairly Martin was thanked for her
"Fun Calendar". The quilted table
cover was on display. Lovie gave a
brief report on the Area Convention
held in Ailsa Craig on October 14.
The ladies had made and sold ap-
ple pies and were pleased with their
profit. The Institute exhibit won
third prize at the Exeter Fall Fair.
Money is available to send a child
to nursery school.
Other items of business were the
new W.I. Centennial Book, the col-
lection of Heinz baby food Labels,
short courses in February 1993 and
an invitation to attend a W.I. meet-
ing in Crediton on November 18.
Lovie then introduced the speak-
er, Lois Hodgins. In a very interest-
ing and humorous manner, she held
up, named, and gave the use for
dozens and dozens of articifes -
many the group had never seen be-
fore.
Hodgins was thanked and given a
small gift in appreciation. Verna
Lovic served them a lunch.
Fred Simmons, fundraising chair-
man for the Association drew the
raffle tickets on prizes donated by
local businesses. Ila Mathers of Ex-
eter, won tableware from Casual In-
dustries; Dave Wheeldon won
brunch for two at Oakwood Inn;
Terry Sweiger won ticket vouchers
to Blyth Festival; Carol MacKin-
non (Madame Olga) won a beauti-
ful cherry cedar chest hand-crafted
by Becker's Wood Products, Dash-
wood. Terry and Sharon Rhomph
of Dashwood were the big winners
taking home a mint set of coins do-
nated by Earl's Taxi, Exeter, vouch-
er tickets to Huron Country Play-
house and a weekend for two at
Harbour Castle Inn, Toronto with
two Blue Jays game tickets, donat-
ed by Ellison Travel and Tours, Ex-
eter.
A harvest buffet dinner was ca-
tered by Richard Erb of Bayfield.
DJ John O'Brien of Hooks Party
Sound provided dinner and dance
music, so those who didn't run
downstairs to watch the final in-
ning of the Blue Jays game could
rock 'n roll the night away.
