Breakfast awareness stressed GODERICH - The Huron County Health Unit, in cooperation with the Huron County Board of Educa- tion and the Huron -Bruce Roman Catholic School Board, is launching "Breakfast Awareness Week in Huron", October 26-30. Breakfast provides both chil- dren and adults with the fuel needed to support mental and physical activity throughout the morning. With about 48 percent of deaths being attributed to lifestyle causes, you can get a jump on good health by starting each day with a breakfast that includes foods from 'three of the four food groups. Results from the Huron County School Health Survey (1991) show a dramatic drop in the number of students who eat breakfast regu- larly when we compare Grade 4 (79%) to Grade 10 (52%). as well, there is a marked rise in the number of students who never eat breakfast from Grade 4 (6%) to Grade 10 (23%). As part of this campaign, teachers will be focusing on breakfast with 11 to 14 year olds in Grades 6,7 and 8. Lifestyle habits developed during childhood carry over into the adult years. Taking action to make a bal- anced breakfast part of your lifestyle can help us im- prove the statistics on positive health behaviours in Huron County.
