Irish top Mitchell Two goals for Riddell MITCHELL - Scott Riddell scored two goals to pace the Lucan Irish to a 4-1 win over the Mitchell Hawks Friday night in OHA Junior Develop- ment League action. The Hft,wks, who bowed after seven games to the Irish in last year's divi- sion final, scored just 54 seconds into the game with the only puck to get past Lucan's Brent Lewis all night. But Sean Kaczmarek and Riddell with his first on the night made it 2-1 at the end of 20 minutes. Riddell popped his second in the middle period and Jason Reidhead connected for the winners in the final frame. The h-ish will try to make it three in a row when they host ML Brydges Wednesday in their home opener and travel to Exeter on Friday. Senior hockey Mohawks wrap up pre -season schedule with third victory STRATHROY - Quality, not quantity The Exeter Mohawks won their final pre -season game Wednesday night and despite having just 12 skaters pencilled m on the game sheet, managed to score eight goals in an 8-2 win over the host Sharks. The Mohawks will begin their Senior A hockey regular season sched- ule on October 24 when they travel to Ingersoll and the following night play host to the Aylmer Hornets in a 7:30 p.m. start at the South Huron Recreation Centre. So far this season. Exeter has had trouble getting bodies out to their games, however, they still managed to win three -of -four exhibition con- tests. Wednesday night in Strathroy, the visitors led 3-2 after the first peri- od on goals by Cory McKee, Ron Elliott and Joe Scherer. Trevor Hunt- er came on to replace the injured Jeff Hill in the Exeter net and the roo- kie did not allow a goal over the next 40 minutes. Andre Prevost and Kevin McArter clicked for the Mohawks in the second, giving them a 5-2 lead and in the third, Exeter received goals . from Rob Kingshot, McArter with his second, and Richard Hawkins. Rat Cousineau scored three in last week's loss to Mitchell. Irvine, who played for the St. Marys midgets a year ago, connect- ed with three in a row just eight minutes apan in the second period. The first one at 8:12 coming on the powerplay and the third, at 16:17 was shorthanded. He got his fourth just 46 seconds into thc third pen- od. "1 don't think it was easy," said Irvine after the game. In the game against Mitchell, Ir- vins missed a couple of shifts be- cause of his asthma which was act- ing up. In fact, he was taken to the hospital just hours before the game. "I have asthma and if I'm outside and come in wh& it's warns, i'll have a hard time breathing." But a week after this episode, he definitely felt much better, leading Junior 'B' hockey the Hawks to their first regular sea- son win of the season. While Irvine paced the winners with four against the Stars, Andrew Barton netted a couple, the first of the game when he moved to thc slot and fired between Josh Sy- mons' legs and the final goal of the game when he showed a lot of stamina. Barton collected his second of the night at the 12:17 mark of the final frame when he knocked a Stars' player down behind the Exet- er net then went all the way down the ice and scored while defense - man Jamie Comish tied up two North Middlesex players. "He's (Barton) a high intensity guy no matter who we're playing," said Hawks' coach George Pratt. "Tonight he came to play." ,Pratt said the veteran Barton has been moved from left wing over to center where he played a lot in mi- nor hockey. While Irvine and Barton scored six goals' between them, Sean McCann, Paul Manders and John O'Hara also beat Symons. Answering for the Stars were Paul Woodburn, Dan Kustermans, Mike Bax and Kevin Leyten. Frustrated:Exeter led 4-0 at the end of the first period and were up 7-1 early in the third but the Stars turned it on and scored three in a row. "We were getting pretty frustrat- ed on the bench and we didn't know what to do. The coach got us pumped up and we got another goal," said Irvine. Pratt, who said sitting back on a lead is a bad habit to get into add- ed, "in the third period we got a lit- tle frustrated and they were putting the puck in the net." Rookie netminder Kirk Durand, the last goalie cut by the St. Marys Junior 'B' Lincolns, faced 31 shots Huron Park's DuBarry hoping for scholarship By Fred Groves T -A staff ST. MARYS - Steve DuBarry doesn't regret not playing in the Ontario Hockey League. Drafted three years ago by the Kingston Fro;,tenacs, DuBarry. the Huron Park native is playing a key role in the St Marys Lincolns drive for a Western Ontario Junior 'B' Hockey League title. There is a certain time restriction on players who attend OHL train- ing camps. If they stay past a desig- nated point, they lose their univer- sity scholarship eligibility, and that's what DuBarry is counting on. "Hopefully I'll get a scholarship. I'm talking with three different schools," said DuBarry before last Tuesday night's game in St. Marys This past weekend, DuBarry and ti! Exeter native Jason Heywood celebrated a goal against Leamington last Tuesday night. Heywood is in his sec ono year with the St. Marys Lincolns. the Lincolns were in Boston for a tournament and he said representa- tives fmm Colgate, a New York university would be there keeping an eye on hire. DuBarry . who attends St. Marys high school said he has already' written his SATTs, an academic test for incoming freshman and the scores were good for the school which stresses academics. The six foot three, 204 pound winger scored 23 goals and had 31 assists during last year's regular season with the Irincolns and added nine goals and four assists in the playoffs. Looking back, DuBarry seems pleased he did not stick with the Frontenacs. "I just went for two days. It never worked out so 1 came home. 1 know some guys that were drafted that year. They played four or five games and stow it's over for them." DuBarry did not play in Tuesday night's win against the Leamington Flyers because of a sore shoulder, but commented the Lincolns are off to a good start to the 1992-93 sea- son. "We've only got eight guys with Junior 'B' experience, the rest are rookies but they're doing well." Looking good: On the subject of doing well, second -year forward Jason Heywood, an Exeter Minor Hockey Association product looked very strong in Tuesday's game. He scored the first goal of the game and helped set up another. Coach Dave MacQueen is using him on the powerplay and has a de- signed play in which those bring- ing up the puck make sure they get n to Heywood who waits on the op- position's blueline. Another Exeter player, defence - man Jamie Cornish played in Tues- day's game and did not look out of place. In fact, he looked like one of the better blueliners being used on powerplays and to kill penalties. The Lincolns and the Exeter Jun- ior D' Hawks arc affiliated which means they have a working agree- ment. St. Marys will periodically call up players to help fill in for in- juries or suspensions. "I'd like to play a few more games but I like playing in Exeter," said Cornish after the game against the Flyers. He played in a few exhibition games with the Lincolns last year but said he didn't make it to this year's tryouts because he was sick. The Fanshawe College student said his gams with St. Marys will no doubt help him when he patrols the blueline for the Hawks. "I like the hard hitting and this (Junior 'B'), is hard hitting. I'm a lit- tle out of shape but I don't mind the skating once I get going." Hensall skaters pass tests HENSALL - The Hensall Fall Figure Skating School has been busy already this fall as they held a test day at the arena on Thursday with several skaters passing their tests. Bulldogs 3 Sean McCann scored throe goals and set up another in this penalty filled game which saw goalie Clint McCann, defenceman Nathan Blight and O'Hara all ejected for fighting at the 9:05 mark of the third period. Clint McCann was given a two - game suspension for the second fight in the same stoppage of play and O'Hara also received a two - game suspension as referee Paul Petrie wrote him up as the third man in. Cousineau, Nick Szabo, and Todd McCann scored singles for the Hawks while O'Hara had a strong game scoring twice and set- ting up another.
