County council undecided on
b iiharmaceutical contract
By Fred Groves

GODERICH - Big V Drag Store
in Batter will have to wait a few
more weeks to find out whWter or
not it has been awarded -a large
pharmaceutical services crettuact
from Huron County.
At Thursday's county council
meeting, it was decided a three-
member arbitration board will be
set up to determine if Big V or
Rieck IDA in Goderich will be
awarded the contract to provide
. pharmaceutical services to the
county's Homes for the Aged.
Rieck IDA did have the previous
contract but since a expired, the
services went to tender and after
bids from five different companies,
the county's Seniors and Social Ser-
vices Committee narrowed their
choices to Rieck's and Big \'.
Huron County is in the comple-
tion stages of it's new Humnview
facility in Clinton and a secomi

The estimated contract is wont:
S60,000 plus drug markup for the
pharmacies.
At a September 24 meeting, the
eight -member coinmittee held two
recorded votes and following a
stalemate, it was decided to bring
the problem to county council as a
whole
It was decided Thursday morning
to form the three-member carnmit-
tee consisting of Stanley Town-
ships Howard Armstrong, Croy
Township's Leona Armstrong and
Bill Vanstone from Colborne
Township. It is hoped they will
make theirdecision for the Novem-
ber 5 council meeting.
It was obvious some councillors
favoured their own community to
receive the contract- Goderich dep-
uty -reeve Bill Clifford was' on the
committee that could not reach a
decision.
Goderich reeve John Doherty
was upset that the contract was
even tendered.
"When 1 hear all the bickering it
just makes me wonder what
prompted the tendering in the first
place. As I understand it, this phar-
macy (Rieck iDA) has supplied
nothing tiut 100 percent service,"
said Doheny. .
Bruce Machan, chairman of the
committee said the contract has
gone to the tendering process be-
fore.
"1n all fairness, 1 don't think it's in
our best interest to keep one and
only one," said Machan.
He was in favour of having the
three-member arbitration commit-
tee established to help make what
has become a tough decision.
"We have spent considerable
time on this," said Machan. "We
could just draw them out of a hat.
At least we have someone else
looking at it fresh. They might sec
something we don't. "
Showing support for his commu-
nity, Exeter reeve Bill Mickle said
originally, the enure Seniors and
Social Services Committee did not
hear the presentations made by the
various companies.
