Host Mitchell Irish hang on, edge Stars 4-3 .By FtiredVrares 'ISA staff PARKHILL - The new kid on the block doesn't look like a stranger. Saturday night in front of a large crowd, the North Middlesex Stars took on the Lucan Irish in both teams 1992-92 OHA Development League season opener. The Stars, in their first year of junior hockey, lost a very close 4-3 decision to the west division pow- erhouse. Just like they did against the Ex- eter Hawks in last weekend's pre- season game, the Stars came out quick and against the Irish held a 2- 0 lead. "We kind of surprised ourselves but we knew they wouldn't be ready for us.. Everyone is taking us for granted," said Stars' captain Paul Woodburn who was one of Lucan's best rookies a year ago. Jamie Tweedle scored the first Stars' goal when he stepped over the blueline and tet go with a rising slapshot which beat Lucan's Eoin McInerney. It was 2-0 when ex -Exeter Hawk Steve Vandenberk came into the middle of the net and connected with another long shot which seemed to catch McInerney off guard. "I'm not upset, he just misplayed them," said Lucan coach Ken Needham of the two goals. But from then on the rookie net - minder was flawless until there was just 11 seconds to go in the and Aaron Brooks scored after ibe Stars' had yanked goalie Andy Gla- vin in favour of the extra attacker. Fallen bodies were just part of the opening night's game in Parkhill on ing Lucan Irish managed to squeak out a 4-3 win. Just like when they played the Hawks. the Stars watched as the opposition battled back. With 1:54 left in the opening frame, Lucan's Ed VanKerkoerle scored on a shot from the blueline to pull his team within one. Then early in the second, the Irish charged out of the dressing room and it was 3-2 for the visitors before the Stars could blink their eyes. "It seems after the first period we let up. At the start of the second pe- riod they always score two goals in the first five minutes when we have the lead," said Woodburn. It took only a couple of minutes No. 3 4 6 78 11 12 14 15 16 17 18 19 21 22 23 24 29 3b Lucan Irish 1992-93 roster Name Eoin McInerney Ed Vankerkoerle Jeff Stanton Keith Robson Kevin Leitch Rost AINkett Greg Dealist Dereck t'ii+ilertlec Jim Stanton Steve Snider Jason Glasser Paul O'Shea Scan Kaczmaexk Steve Moore Travis Love Scott Riddell Ryan Iteliveau Jason 1 eidhend Brent Lewis Chris Chatter Pos. "I thought he'd score the garbage goals," said Needham of Stanton. "He's not a finesse player but he did a good job on that one." It was the nicest goal of the night as Riddell raced to the puck along the boards, and got a backhander into the middle of the rink to Stan- ton. What proved to be the winning goal came with just 7:22 left in the second when second -year forward Steve Snider did a good job just to keep the puck on -side and then blasted one past Glavin's stick side. After the game, Needham said there were some flaws but his team seems to be pretty web together. "I don't think we played to our capability, we were flat I don't think we're lacking anything, we're just going to be patient and sec what happens." With the absence of Lucan vete- ran dcfenceman Kevin Leitch, and after the ejection of Ed VanKer- koerle in the second period, the Irish blueliners managed to hold to- gether and rookies Travis Love and Ryan Beliveau played well. ishagagaiia:...Glayln, a Ste- phen Township Minor Hockey productlooked good in net and so did Stars' rookie centre Nathan McCann,..The Irish travel to Mitch ell en F.ridar•for an 8:30 p.m. gamic with the -Hawks. Despite having just five defense - men, three of them rookies, the Ex- eter blueliners improved considera- bly from the pre -season contests. And although Ray Cousineau said he's not in shape yet, the speedy Exeter rightwinger scored three of the visitors goals and set up the fourth. In the third period, Cousineau scored on the powerplay and after he put a backhander past Mitchell veteran netminder Jason Brooks, he was knocked heavily to the ice. "We have a lot of young players and these guys (Mitchell) intimi- dated us in the exhibition game. They outskated us and they out hit us," said Cousineau with an ice pack nearby. While Mitchell dumped Exeter 11-1 in an exhibition game, it was only 2-1 for the home team after the first period of Friday's game and 4-2 after 40 minutes. "I'm pleased with the first game. They hail more chances and they capitalized," said Exeter coach George Pratt. Paul Barton gave Exeter a quick 1-0 lead just 1:38 into the game when he teamed with Todd McCann and Cousineau and scored from right in front of the net. The rest of the Exeter goals were scored by Cousineau and it seemed every tune he connected, pulling the visitors to within a goal, Mitch- ell would regroup and get one back less than a minute later. "We got to offensive minded and what happened is we got caught up. We jumped the gun a Gale on playing defensive. Once we got within one there was lot of hockey left," said Pratt. Jason McBride, Mark Lynn and Kevin Tate all played in their first regular season Junior 'D' game and were joined on the blueline by vet - trans Jamie Cornish and Nathan Blight. Killing a lot of penalties, espe- cially late in the second period put a lot of pressure on the defencemen but they seemed to handle the situ- ations fairly well. "Once we get (Larry) Lewis back and have six ddfensemen, they'll be a little more set," said Prau. Cousineau began his hat trick in the second period when he put one up high and in the third period got his' 'second again went high this time on Brooks' glove save. On a powerplay late in the third, Paul Manders dug the puck out from along the boards, put it into the corner to Dan Ryan who some- how managed to find Cousineau in front of the net and let•go with a backhander. "Dan and I used to do that in mid- get. We've been doing it for four years," said Cousineau of the goal. Although it was the first game of the season for both teams, there was a lot of heavy hits like when Mitchell's Luke Smith caught Bar- ton with his head down. Later in the game the two got in a fight and were both ejected.
