By Fred Ornves

LUCAN - One dung is for cer-
tain about the Lucan Irish this year,
they are lig to protect their goal -
tenders.

their netminders.
The Irish won all twee of their
OHA Junior Development League
games last week which concluded
their pre -season schedule at 4-1.
In a 5-3 win over the Centen-
naires on Friday, the Irish had to
make sum the home team weren't
taking any cheap shots at goalies
Eoin McInerney and Brent Lewis.
Saturday, the Irish beat visiting
Wellesley Appleiacks 4-0 and vet-
eran Lucan defenceman Ed Van-
Kerlmerle was ejected after he
helped out Lewis.
"I think we are going to have to
protect the goalie a lot more," said
defenceman Kevin Leitch. They're
getting dirtier and getting more
cheap shots in."
Lucan coach Ken Needham said
if the referees won't monitor the.
abuse to goalies, the Irish will flea
to do it themselves.
"We can't have it," he simply
said.
Against the AppleJacks, then
was no score in the first period and
it wasn't until the 7:53 mark of the
second frame when Mark Phillips,
trailing the play, scored high on
Jeff Henrich.
The. Irish had a couple of good
chances during the first 40 minutes
to scare on the powerplay but nei-
ther Derek Greenlee or Greg De -
Prrst connected.
On Tuesday, the Irish easily han-
dled the AppleJacks 9-3 but
Wellesley seemed to bring a differ-
ent team with them to the Lucan

Robinson the veteran, and
McCann the rookie combined for
nine of the Exeter Hawks' 14 pre-
season goals.
In Hensel' Sunday night,
McCann fired four and set up an-
other while Robinson scored once
and had four assists in a 10-4 win
over the North Middlesex Stars.
The win gave the Hawks their
first OHA Development League
exhibition win as they head int)
Friday night's regular season open-
er in Mitchell.
Although the energetic Sears
came out and made it 2-0 within
the first seven minutes, Exeter's de-
fence sealed down and in front of
some good saves by goalie Clint
McCann, managed to battle back
and led 6-4 after two periods.
This is Robinson's third season
with the Hawks and it looks like
he'll become the setup man for a lot
of McCann goals.
" W c seers to know where each
other is all the umc," said Robtit-
son of McCann.
The two seemed to know just
when to tum it on in Sunday's
game as Robinson notched a shore

- Robinson was surprised at the
Stars' quick pace which gave them
an early lead.
"I thought it would be a walko-
ver, we were a little over confi-
dent" '
After the fourth Stars' goal. the
Hawks' defence coach Dan Mudge
had a bnef chat with his blueliners
at the end of -the -bench -and it
seemed to pick them up a hale.
Kevin Tate seemed to pick up the
pace and he started giving out
some hard tats.
Exeter coach George Pratt said
his team was taught off guard by
the Stars' dump and chase type of
hockey.
"hey were .playing -a -scramble
type, just dump and go get it."
It worked for the visitors as Cam
Bridge, Mark VanGeffen, Jeremy
Ross and Steve Vandenberk scored
in the first period while Steve Bax
and Chris Stanlake clicked in the
third.
When asked if the Hawks were
ready to start the season, Pratt
didn't really know yet..
"Our. intensity is a little down for
what I'd like it to bc."
He added the Hawks just don't
seem to be mentally into the game.

very good fight until the last few
minutes of the game.
"I think our guys were thinking
of the game we played earlier,"
said Needham.
In the very physical third period,
the AppleJacks went to the penalty
box a few more times than the Irish
did and Lucan cashed in on power-
play goals.
Jason Glasser tucked one under
the crossbar, Mau Munro scored on
along shot and a quick Andy Ross
wrist shot made it 4-0 late in the
game.
For Kevin Leitch this is his sixth
season with the Irish and he knows
what he wants.
