Labour Federation criticizes newspaper -sponsored ads TORONTO - The Ontario Feder- ation of Labour launched a com- plaint with the Ontario Press Coun- cil on Monday against the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, the Hamilton Spectator, the London Free Press and all other daily and weekly papers that have run the full-page ads against the proposed changes to the Ontario Labour Re- lations Act, sponsored by the Cana- dian Daily Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community News- paper Association. The ads have also appeared in the Times Advocate, an OCNA mem- ber. Ontario Federation of Labour president Gard Wilson called the ads an abuse of power by newspa- per publishers. "Picture a World Series baseball final where the umpire works for one of the teams," Wilson said. "This is what's happening in the province of Ontario now that the daily and weekly newspapers, the vehicles responsible for calling the plays of the day, have donned the powerful corporate uniform against Crime Stoppers crime of the week Crime Stoppers of Huron County and the Exeter Police are asking the public's help in solving this crime. Overnight on August 21, 1992 someone broke into the Exeter Li- ons Youth Centre and stole a televi- sion and a VCR. The television is described as a 14" ElectnThuine, black in colour with remote itrol, serial number G331104662. The VCR was a Iiitachi, also black, and model number VT3000A. Wilson says the Canadian Daily Newspaper Association justifies its action by stating that the ad carn- paign represents the business rather than the editorial function of the newspapers. "Few readers, however, have been warned or otherwise prepared to make the kind of distinction this unprecedented shift represents," said Wilson. "The CDNA code of ethics states that conflicts of interest, and the ap- pearance of conflicts of interest, must be avoided." Times Advocate publisher Jim Beckett said that he chose to sup- port the OCNA's campaign against the Labour Act reforms. "The Times Advocate agrees wholeheartedly with the decision taken by our Community Newspa- per, Association to use the advertis- ing as a way of presenting an alter- nate opinion to the NDP rushing through this legislation," said Beck- ett, pointing out that governments often spend a lot of money promot- ing their legislation and programs. In all, Beckett said he could see the changes to the Labour Act harming investment in Ontario. "I don't think it's as bad for busi- nesses already in Ontario as it is bad for businesses thinking of lo- cating in Ontario." By Bay Lewis TA -Staff HENS ALL - Curious about your mots? Ever won- der if your a descendant of some great battalion command- er, king, or maybe the king? A Targe crowd of history buffs gathered at the Hensall United Church last Saturday, hoping to trace their family roots with a little help from some friends. The Huron County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) attracted over 50 curious in- dividuals for a day -long beginners' workshop in genealogy. The branch, which began operation in 1980 as one of 28 branches of OGS, and its members came armed with plenty of materials to give be- ginners the chance to literally do some of their research right on the spot. "We're mostly into family re- search and that type of thing," said Debra Verkutis, chairman of the Huron chapter. "But over the last couple of years we've really been busy trying to put together some sort of profile on the county." The Huron County Branch of OGS is a non-profit organization interested in genealogy and family history, with the emphasis on Hu- ron County families. Its aims are to promote the study of genealogy in the area, provide a forum for ideas and techniques and provide gather- ings for the exchange of informa- tion. "We're just here to help people and point them in the right direc- tion," confirmed Verkutis. "There are a lot of people out there who are interested in tracing a family tree but don't realize there are peo- ple who will help." Although the branch does not guarantee to undertake research, most letters received by the re- search co-ordinator of the branch are read at regular meetings, and members attempt to respond while the co-ordinator checks readily available sources. For those who are interested but aren't from Huron County, have no fear because the branch is still more than willing to help. Verkutis her- self is a native of London, although she found her roots to be in Huron. "We'll help them find ways to do their research in England if need be," said Verkutis. "Their roots don't have to be here." In addition to helping individuals, the branch has been busy indexing Huron cemeteries. They have only five to complete, and when finished will have available a complete in- dex transcribed, published and ready for sale. As of fall 1991, 102 sites were recorded of which 94 in- dexes were for sale. As well, through its branches the OGS has indexed the entire 1871 Ontario census returns (heads of households). Copies of the index will be available on microfilm and in separate county publications. The society is presently compil- ing a church records project which will provide reference of where all pre -1900 church records arc and how to access them. The next meeting for the Huron chapter will be their annual meet- ing November 5 in Holmesville. It will feature a potluck supper and Ian Wilson, archivist for Ontario will be guest speaker. On April 17, the region three meeting will be held in Belgravc and will offer an all -day workshop similar to the one in Hensall.
