HENSALL - With just one veteran defenseman in
the lineup Sunday night, the Exeter Hawks had a kir 01
trouble fighting off the Mitchell Hawks who won 11-1
in an OHA Junior Development Hockey League pre-
season game.
It was the second time during the weekend that
Mitchell won as they, beat visiting Exeter 4-3 on Fri-
day.
Nathan Blight was the only returning blueliner in
Sunday's game as Jamie Cornish and Larry Lewis sat
while the injured John Bell won't he on the ice for an-
other couple of weeks.
"Our goaltending didn't have a whole lot of help,"
said Exeter coach George Prau.
Kirk Durand started in goal and allowed seven goals
before giving way mid -way through the second frame
to Darren Kints.
Exeter scored just 1!41 into the game on a powerplay
when Scan McCann walked in from the left side and
let go with a backhander past Jason Brooks. Todd
McCann and Mark Lynn assisted.
Mitchell quickly regrouped and started playing a
physical game which resulted in them taking a 3-1 lead
atter 20 minutes.
"The biggest thing (Mitchell) had going was fore -
checking. They dominated in our end," said Pratt.
In the first period, the large crowd watched a game
which almost looked like playoff contest as the intensi-
ty was high and obviously there were a few players on
both teams still trying to crack the lineup.
Although Exeter was down 9-1 after two periods
they did come on in the fowl 20 minutes and played
with some inspiration, holding the visitors to just two
tallies.
"When we were down 9-1, I just said play 20 min-
utes. The guys turned it on a little," said Pratt.
Exeter had just four veterans in Sunday's game in
Shawn Chipchase, Ray Cousineau, Nick Wieckowski
and Blight.
There were seven members of last year's Exeter's
OMHA champion midget team. Of those McCann
looked impressive and so did Lynn on defence who
gave out a few good hits in the third period.
"Mark played a great game," said Pratt.
For Mitchell, Gary VanBakel sparked the offence
with a goal and four assists while Rob Boville had a
goal and two assists. Also scoring two each were Rob
Jarmuth, Dan Boyd and Craig Quipp with the other
from Jarrett Keller.

Trailing 4-0 after two periods, Exeter came to life in
a big way as they rallied and nearly came hack to win
their first pre -season game.
Kints let in all four goals before veteran Clint
McCann came on and he seemed to get the offense
motivated.
Sean McCann scored from veteran Shayne Robinson
and Dan Irvine and then it was Robinson from
McCann and Irvine and finally McCann fmm Irvine
and Robinson again.
Hawks happenings: Jason McBride, one of the sev-
en midgets, took on Mitchell tough guy Trevor Harmer
and didn't do too bad...Local hockey fans will get their
fust look at the new NorthMiddlesex Stars fmm Park-
hill as they travel to Hensall on Sunday to meet the
Hawks at 8:30 p.m.

LUCAN - Although the Lucan
Irish will have two new goalies be-
tween the pipes this season, they
will be strong defensively as four
blueiiners are returning.
Thursday night the Irish didn't
have their game legs yet as they
lost their opening pre -season game
5-2 to the visiting Lambeth Lanc-
ers.
SundaN they regrouped to beat
Mt. Brydges, 6-1.
All four returning dcfencemen
were in the lineup on Thursday'
they and looked shakey but they
managed to settle down giving up
only one goal in both the second
and third periods.
Keith Robson, Ed VanKericoerlc,
Chris Chafer who joined the Irish
after Christmas last year and sixth
year man Kevin Leitch are the re-
turning defenseman.

have gained some confidence fol-
lowing his rookie season.
"It came from a lot of ice time I
got last year and the ice time I got
with the B's (Strathroy Blades)."
said Robson. He said this fall,
hockey seems to be a lot easier and
more relaxed.
The Irish stili have to trim down
their roster including releasing two
or three defencemen but it's a safe
bet to say the returning foursome
will make the club.
"A lot of the rookies arc older
than me and have a fcw more years
expenencc but they haven't had
any experience in the league," said
Robson. I think 1 can give them a
few hints."
After Thursday's game. Lucan
coach Ken Needham modestly said
the drish will be "okay defensive-
ly."
Lambeth came out strong in .the
first period and nearly caught Irish
goalie David Wilcox off guard but
he kept a couple of attempts out oI
the net before the visitors got on
the board. It was 2-0 for,the Lanc-
ers before the Irish could muster
any offense.
"1'm not too worried, that's just
the first game," said Needham.
One combination that seemed u
work well for Lucan in the opener
was rookie centre Chris Haskcu
sandwiched between veteran wing
ers Andy Ross and Steve Snider.
