jSenior girls win consolation
title of their own tournament
EXETER - The South Huron
District High School Sectio[ girls
basketball team got off to a good
start as they opened their season
by once again winning the conso-
lation championship of their own
eight warn tournament Saturday
night.
The Panthers built a 14-8 lead
over St. Thomas' Parkside before
going on to a slim 24-20 win.
Parkside came on in the end but
South Huron used their bench
well to spell off their starters.
South Huron took advantage of
several Parkside fouls and turno-
vers m the opening quarter and
with the help of guard Stacey
Rader's two long shots, were up
6-2 in the opening minutes.
Rader 4ed the Panthers' offense
with 10 points while Stacey Thur-
man netted six.
Stacey Spicer did an outstand-
ing job grabbing key rebounds tor
the Panthers despite going up
against taller Parkside players.
In the third quarter, the turno-
vers which went in favour of
South Huron in the opening quar-
ter, went against them earlier in
the second half and Parkside nar-
rowed the gap to two points.
It took the Panthers over four
minutes to score in the second
half but once they got their of-
fense back in gear they managed
to build a ten point lead before the
quarter ended.
Thurman came off the bench
and played well defensively mak-
ing a couple of steals which
helped the Panthers' stay in the
game.
With 49 seconds left in the
game, Rader made a nice block on
a shot which stopped Parkside to
pulling within a basket.

From the opening tip-off this
one belonged to the hosts as the
heat the Mustangs from Wing -
ham.
It could be a while before South
Huron's Amy Campbell has an-
other game like this one as she to-
tally dominated the game offen-
sively, leading all scorers with 16
points.
Although small in stature,
Campbell a veteran of the senior
squad, waited patiently under. the
basket for passes and also mus-
cled her way towards the hoop.
The Panthers led 13-7 at the
half, Campbell scored 12 of those
points including back-to-back
pointers which came less than 20
seconds apart in the second quar-
ter.
In the third quarter, South Hu-
ron took their time on offense
which saw Ann Wolper convert a
nice pass from Rader and with
3:12 left, Rader launched a three -
pointer which gave -the Panthers a
comfortable 22-10 lead.
Chris Schade hit a shot from the
top of the key with just five ticks
left in the third quarter and South
Huron held a 17 point lead.

South Huron nearly pulled a big
upset over London Beal Friday
night as they kept them off the
board for all but a minute in the fi-
nal quarter.•
Trailing 23-10 at the halt, the
Panthers regrouped and in the
fourth quarter scored six points in
a minute -and -a -halt. Rader stole
the ball and connected mid -way
through the last quarter to make n
30-26 for Beal who hung on u'
win. '
Starting forward Ange Gould
twisted her ankle late in the game
and did not play the rest of the
tournament. She had nine points
before getting minted while leader
had eight and Walper added lour
points.
The Panthers will try and stay
on the winnrng•track as they head
to London this weekend for a tour-
nament at Saunders High School.
