Ellisons gave a $1 donation for every ticket sold to Huron County residents for a Toronto Blue Jays game June 13. Five hundred tickets were sold resulting m a $500 dona- tion. Five Japanese seed merchants toured Southwestern On- tario recently in a search for suitable varieties and hybrids for import. The tour was hosted by Ciba-Geigy Seeds Ltd. of Ailsa Craig. The decision was made after conferring with Mr. Green, manager of the Exeter branch of Canadian Canners where many students are employed. Scarcity of term la- bour also counted in the decision. The Exeter golf tournament at the Oakwood club in Grand Bend was won by Dick Creech and Bob Diwney. Attendance at last week's Exeter Fair was estimated at 2,500. Gate receipts were $450. Re- ceipts were $135. 100 Years Ago The second fall fair of the Henson Independent Agricul- tural Society was a success, financially and otherwise. A hunting club has been organized among the married men at McGillivray. William Fraser is president. The first game captured was a coon by Messrs. John Patching and John Amos. While one of Crediton's fair young ladies was out in the country a day or two ago she undertook to drive a team of horses hooked to a spade pulverizer. Varna. by Joan Beierling VARNA - The first 4-H meedttg was -held Tuesday, September 1561 the Varna United Church with 18 members present. The theme for she club is The Neat thicken and Bgg Project "Which comes first the Egg or the Mick, The Chick or the Egg"! Blectians were held. The Presi- dent is Lease Maetard, Vice- president is Kim Taylor, Secretary is Kris•McNaughton and Press re- porter is Leanne Keys. They then made omelets and experimented with enfland hard boiled eggs. UCW Goshen United Church Women met in the church last Thursday evening. Guests were present from the Varna, Bayfield, Zurich, Bruce - field and Ktppen U.C.W.'s. The special feature of the evening was a slide presentation and com- mentary given by Jim Papple assist- ed by his wife Janet. They visited Ethiopia, Mozambique, Zimhabure and Kenya along with a" few others from the Foodgrains Banks Com- mittee who went to see how the grain shipped by the Foodgrains Bank was distributed. The grain seems to be distributed in a very systematic and orderly way. Many people receive a few kilos of corn and a half a cupful of canola oil for a day's work. Records are kept for the grain that is given out. A delicious hmch was then served and after the guests left the Goshen ladies had a short business meeting conducted by Evelyn McKinley in the absence of Agnes Lampierc. The bake sale held at the Com- plex- grounds on September 5 was quite successful. Plans were made for the annual turkey dinner to be Saintsbury by 1-1. Personals Sevetal in the area attended the Hunt-Cardno wedding in Seafonh on Saturday, September 19 and the Open House on Sunday at the home of the bride's parent, Carol and Francis Hunt near Winthrop. The bride Mary Hunt is a granddaughter of Ruby and Gordon Hill. Some dates for the Stan Lee Club members to keep in mind is the trip to Blyth on this Saturday to the John Allan Cameron show, the reg- ular meeting on Wednesday, Octo- ber 7, providing entertainment at - Huronview for the November birth- day patty on November 10 (note this change). Ivan and Margaret McClymont have arranged a trip to Stratford for the club to tour the "backstage" of the Stratford Shakespearean Thea- tre on Wednesday, November 18. They will stop for hutch in Strat- ford prior to going to the theatre.
