With the 12th annual event organized for Zurich, Exeter and the schools of Zurich Public, Hensall Public and Huron Centennial, over 5I3,000 was raised for cancer research. Zurich carried the bulk of the load as the village raised a whop- ping 59,822.26. Figures combined with that of the schools brought to- tals to $10,685.76, although that number will again increase as the school's are still accepting dona- tions until today (Wednesday). This was the second annual Terry Fox Run in the village of Zurich, and organizer Wendy Rowan was ecstatic about the result "People were saying the second run would never be as good as the first, but we really wanted to prove them wrong," said Rowan. Last year, Zurich raised $9,170, but Rowan was convinced the vil- lage could do even better. "I really wanted to beat last 'year's total to prove it could be done," confirmed Rowan. "And Zurich we'll beat it again next year." Eighty-nine runners, walkers, rol- lerbladers and cyclists took part in the 8 km event, but other special activities help boost totals. Accord- ing to Rowan, businesses were very generous in the area, donating goods for a silent auction. In addi• - tion, a raffle and t -shirt sales also contributed. "We tried to keep the atmosphere very upbeat and make the event fun for everyone," said Rowan. "It was kind of a party." Participants warmed -up with aer- obics before the run and afterwards took part in a barbecue. Meanwhile, although the run or- ganized for Exeter raised no where near the amount the Zurich run did, participation was up nearly 200 percent. Last year, participation in the Ex- eter run fell to a dismal 20 runners. This year, the event attracted 54 runners, walkers and rollerbladers raising a total of $2,619. Organizer Adrian Harte was opti- mistic at the Exeter response, but said it is no where near what could be expected of a town this size. "We were more concerned this year with trying to increase our par- ticipation than we were with the money raised," confirmed Harte. "It's a good start for next year." Nationwide, approximately 550,000 people took pan in the 12th annual Terry Fox Run, over 50,000 more than last year. The td- tal money raised for cancer re- search is expected to surpass the $8 million mark. In 1992, participants raised 57.5. Both Exeter.. and Zurich events boost participation and pledges over 199 levels Jennifer Brule and her dog Hunter were just two of many par- ticipants to take part in the Terry Fox Run held in Zurich on Sunday. Mark Bell bears the flag as members of Hensall Public School march to raise money for the Terry Fox Run Friday at the school.
