Men's fastball
Playoffgame protested, two innings to be replayed
By Peed Groves

HENSALL - It was a very strange night on the ball
diamond in Hensall on Wednesday.
The Exeter Chrysler Imperials managed to win their
South Perth Men's Fastball League game on the score -
book but had to play the final two -and -a -third innings
over last night.
With two out in the top of the seventh inning, Exeter
pitcher Derwyn Hodgins apparently balked but the um -
pries did not call n.
At the time Exeter held a 3-1 lead so last night, the
game resumed in the seventh with two out. On
Wednesday, Paul Ford was at third base so, starting
last night's game he was allowed to score to make it 3-
2 with a runner on third.
Last night Lother Mueller was scheduled to be up to
bat with a two -and -one count but since he is vacation-
ing, he'll have to he substituted for
If Exeter does remain in the lead after the two in-
nings, a third game will be played.
On Wednesday, a home run by an unexpected Doug
Charlton, Hodgins' balk and a cross of signals in which
Mike Neil was tagged out, were just a few of the
somewhat bizzare incidents in the game.
The winner of this series will take on on the St. Mar-
ys Selects for the 'A' championship. St. Marys beat the

it was kind of an eerie night, the weather was
weird," said Imperials coach Chuck Humbey of the
game in Hensall.
The game had to be haulted several times throughout

EMHA hockey school
comes at right time
HURON PARK - The Exeter Minor Hocken Association's first hockey
school couldn't have come at a better time.
Last week, over 90 players from the area laced up their blades. donned
their pads and prepared for the 1992-93 hockey season.
While many hockey schools are held m the summer, this one, which
concluded Saturday, is followed immediately by team tryouts which began
Monday.
Terry Bourne of Exeter, was the head instructor for the five-day camp
which saw players aged 7-14 sent through a lot of skating and puck han-
dling drills.
"I haven't heard anything less than fantastic," said EMHA acung presi-
dent Jim Beckett of the response from parents. "It's a pre -tryout for the
teams," he added.
Several EMHA coaches were on the ice at the Stephen Township Arena
as instructors whicn gave them a sneak peek at some ot their prospects.
"They don't waste anytime,' said Beckeu watching one ot the sessions
last week. "The guys helping are all decent players too.'
Beginning last Tuesday. Bourne and the other coaches broke down the
players into timed age groups. 7-9; 10-12; 12-14 and had two goahes with _
each group. •
"That's all Terry wanted; 32 per group. 1 think it's dust about tight,' said
Beckett.
He said the EMHA hopes to build on this year's success and have an-
other school next fall.

the night so umpires could dry the balls oft.
Wednesday's game started just like Game One did, a
pitching duel between Hodgins and Jon Van Ness.
Hodgins struck out eight of the first 11 batters he
faced while Van Ness was able to keep the imperials at
bay until the fourth frame.
In the fourth, catcher Brian Noyes led off with a sin-
gle, moved on Mike Neil's base hit and then Steve
Neil, eighth in the trailing order, connected with a sin-
gle up the middle to score Noyes.
Jim Allison hit a long hall to right field and although
he was tossed out at second, scored Steve Neil with
what proved to be the winning run of the game.
"It's certainly a nice change," said Humbey about
getting extended production from his bottom three. hit-
ters. "Four hits in one inning manufactured two runs
which is not normal for us."
Both Steve and Mike Neil had two hits each to lead
the. imperials offense which collected eight hits off of
Van Ness.
In the top of the fifth, Generals' Rob Petick doubled
and scored on an error committed by Allison at second
base.
Exeter padded their bad in the sixth when Charlton
led off with a 240 -foot home -run into a strong wind
which made it 3-1.
"I just sat there and watched 1 don't know how it
went out," said Humbey of the home run.
St. Pauls threatened in the seventh when Paul Ford
got his second hit of the night, eventually reached third ,
on a passed ball, but stayed there despite what ap-
peared to be a balk by Hodgins.
He came off the mound but did not delivery because
he said later he turned the wrong way. The Generals'
coach complained to both umpires and was ejected
from the game. -
Later, St. Pauls catcher Gary Reyner was also tossed
out for arguing about a called third strike.
Exeter came very close to blowing things wide open
in the sixth when, after Charlton's home nen, Mike
Neil singled, Steve Neil hit and Allison loaded the bas-
es on a walk.
But with two out, and shortstop Dan Heywood at
hat, Mike Neil got confused what the count on Hey-
wood was and began walking home when the count
was just 3 -and -2. He was tagged out to end the ralh
