Lots of goalies to choose from at Lucan Irish training camp
By Fed Groves
T -A staff
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish of the
Ontario Junior Development
League (Junior D') may have set a
record of some son as it had 18
goalies attended its opening night
of training camp.
Wednesday and Thursday were
primarily for rookies as the Irish,
defending division champions had
about 80 hopefuls trying to crack
the lineup.
There was nothing special about
Wednesday night's workout at the
Lucan Community Centre as
players warmed up the goalies
briefly and then they were divided
into two teams to scrimmage for
over an hour.
Watching from the stands was
last year's captain Andy Ross who
returns for his fourth year. He and
the rest of the veterans were sched-
uled to skate last night.
Ross said things have sure
changed from when he first tried
out for the club. They didn't scrim-
mage immediately.
"You're going to find out sooner
or later if you'll be there. There
seems to be no fresh ideas. That's
everywhere, even in Junior 'A',"
said Ross of the method of select-
ing a team.
Irish coach Ken Needham and as -
quality not quantity that counts.
"1 don't think you can have too
many goalies. You can't let the
good ones get away," said Pearce.
Among those trying to crack the
Irish lineup is goalie Andy Glavin
who played with the Stelihen
"You can't let the

sisetnt Jamie Pearce went on the
ice just for a couple of moments on
Wednesday and they viewed the
rookies from the stands.
"Once again, it seems to be a re-
building year," said Pearce.
Wednesday's workout was some-
what hectic as the 18 goalies had to
switch on the fly so all could have
a chance between the pipes. Al-
though there were a lot of them, it's
Township bantams test season.
There is a major concern about
goaltending as veteran Bob Szabo
was an overager last year and is not
eligible to return.
"We realize Bobby's gone. it was
easy to have a five-minute lapse
and let him stop it," said Ross.
He said the Irish could play badly
for several. minutes and Szabo
would always do his best to keep
them in the game.
While the veterans were lacing
up the blades last night, that does
not mean they have guaranteed
spots on the team.
"If somebody can fill the role,
they're going to do h. We have va-
cancies everywhere," said Pearce.
Wednesdays scrimmage started
out slow but once the rookies got
into it and began getting their skat-
ing legs, there were some good
passes, hard hits and even the odd
brief standoff in front of the net.
With big Jon McEachern not re-
turning, the Irish are looking for a
large player who can fill a key role.
"I'd like to see some fair size, it
doesn't have to be big," said Ross.
Among those who did well the
opening night were brothers Jim
and Jeff Stanton, who were on the
Ilderton midget team last year and
Shawn Fairweather from the Lucan
midgets.

and Pearce were able to watch the

NHL and AHL officials.
