Times Advocate, 1992-09-09, Page 15MARKED SPORT r Times -Advocate, September 9, 1992 Page 15 Shaw moves again, now with the Bruins ST. JOSEPH'S - Dave Shaw is now a Boston Bruin. Late Wednesday night, the Na- tional Hockey League team an- nounced it had signed the Exeter native. Shaw, a veteran defenseman, played for three different clubs last year, starting with the New York Rangers, then a brief two month stop in Edmonton with the Oilers before being traded to the Minneso- ta North Stars where he concluded the 1991-92 season. He was with the Rangers for 10 games, 12 with the Oilers and 37 with the North Stars accumulating one goal, nine assists and 72 penal- ty minutes. Although the Bruins will be re- ceiving future considerations, this was not a trade as Shaw's contract with Minnesota had expired. "It was more 1 signed with Bos- ton. My agent got the okay from Minnesota to feel around," hq said from his summer home in St. Jo- seph's. "That was the whole purpose of it. 1 was looking for the average sal- ary which is $370,000. Minnesota was looking to offer less than that." He said it would have been a lit- tle different story if he had been with the North Stars for three or four years. Shaw was recently honoured by the Exeter Minor Hockey Associa- tion for his contributions as a pro- fessional hockey player. A picture of him which hangs in the lobby of the South Huron Recreation Centre has him wearing a Quebec Nor- diques jersey. The Nordiques drafted him out of junior. A sweater he presented to the EMHA is a North Stars' jersey. "I've talked to Mike Milbury, (of the Bruins) and I asked him if I was going to play. He said he wouldn't be paying me that money if 1 wasn't." Shaw is a stay-at-home defense - man who is known for getting the job done. He will now become pan of the defense corps which includes former Norris Trophy winner Ray- mond Bourque. "It's pretty exciting," said Shaw of going to the Bruins. "1 don't know if I'll be playing with him or nu" Last year was a hectic season for Shaw, his wife and two daughters as they moved from city to city. They still own a house in New York which they are renting out and their furniture will now be tak- en out of storage in Edmonton.
