Waste management plan
won't be done until 1995
GODERICH - It's going to be at
least another three years before Hu-
ron County has its own landfill site.
Thursday morning in Goderich at
Huron County Council, Tom
Tomes, chairman of the county's
Waste Management Committee,
said it will be at least 1995 before
the final stage of the master plan is
completed.
The committee has had to delay
the completion because proposed
sites for the new landfill were all
rejected. It is hoped that once the
county's own site is opened, all mu-
nicipalities in Huron County will
be able to use it and eventually
close their own landfills.
Tomes said the committee is try-
ing to clear up three major ques-
tions: What is it they are doing?,
Where are they at now? When will
the master plan be completed''

He said the list of proposed sites
would be reevaluated and different
criteria will be posed to the sites.
But the waste management com-
mittee and the county staff have an-
other problem on their hands and
that is trying to aid local municipal-
ities to find more capacity in their
own sites.
"It's not a hidden agenda. We
want to see what capacity we have
and alternatives for that capacity,"
said Tomes.
County engineer Dennis Merrall
said there is still the possibility of
municipalities sharing landfills
once theirs have filled to capacity.
However, this is not easy.
"Can we work the Environmental
Protection Act into our Master
Plan?" asked Merrell.
He Said'it is an economical barri-
er to share sites and that the county
would have to have meetings with
the Ministry of the Environment to
see if it is feaiible.
