GRANTON - The 2nd annual
Teddy Bear Picnic sponsored by
the Granton Optimists was held at
the Masonic Hall on Saturday, Au-

a pinata game.
.Judging was tough but the final
teddy bear winners were, Joseph
Riley with the oldest bear, Adam
Harrison with the most huggable,
Amy Lovell with the biggest, Tyler
Wessman with the smallest, Kristie
Riley with the best dressed and
Frankie Toering with the most
cherished.
After all the excitement, the chil-
dren enjoyed hot dogs and a teddy
bear cake.
Special thanks to organizers Tru-
dy Kop, Val Middleton, Juanita
Kop and Joanne Harrison and to
anyone who helped in any way. •

Housing starts rise again in July
OTTAWA - Total Canadian
housing starts increased by five
percent in July to a seasonably ad-
justed annual rate (SAAR*) of
177,000 units, up from the revised
June level of 169,000 units, ac-
cording to Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation.
Higher starts in both single -
detached and multiple housing
units were reported in urban areas.
Single -detached units rose four
percent to 74,000 units SAAR,
while multiple starts reached
79,000, an increase of five percent.
"The increases in July mainly re-
flected greater construction of so-
cial housing in Ontario. However,
starts of single detached houses in
a number of provinces continue to
improve•slowly," said Rita Daniel,
Director of CMHC's Market Anal-
ysis Centre.
Starts in Ontario jumped 35 per-
cent to 58,000 units from 43,000
units SAAR in June. Private sector
starts remained stable, while social
housing expended dramatically.
Quebec starts declined by 24 per -
cern to 29,000 units from 38,000
units SAAR last month. Construc-
tion of singles, rental units and con-
dominiums all saw a decreases in
July due to an over supply of hous-
ing and a weak economy.
