Parkhill lands are
retained by ABCA
EXETER - The Ausable-
Bayfield Conservation Authority,
(ABCA), has decided not to sell
eight parcels of land in Parkhill and
McGillivray Township.
The subject of a public forum last
year, the land sale proposal origi-
nated because of a request from a
developer who approached the
ABCA about their property adja-
cent to William and Eagle Streets
in Parkhill.
While considering the develop-
er's request, the conservation au-
thority also examined its other
properties in the area and drew up a.
plan for the sale of 18 acres: five
parcels of land comprising 12 acres
within the town of Parkhill, and
three lots totalling six acres north
of town in McGillivray township.
A number of the properties in-
cluded land that the conservation
authority had purchased from pri-
vate owners in the 1960s, when
flooding necessitated the construc-
tion of the Parkhill Dam. These
owners, as well as the general pub-
lic, were invited to a meeting on
April 12, 1991 to discuss the pro-
posed land sale and offer sugges-
tions as to how the resulting funds
might be used.
The ABCA decided that the origi-
nal landowners should be given thc
first opportunity to purchase the
properties and drafted a varied list
of projects that could benefit from
the funds raised, including im-
provements to agricultural land,
road and trail systems within thc
Parkhill Conservation Area, addi-
tional camp sites, reservoir bank
erosion control, fisheries manage-
ment, tree -planting and others.
Following the.public meeting, thc
ABCA made inquiries into provin-
cial government regulations re-
garding land sales and presented
that information as well as a report
on the public forum to the conser-
vation authority's board of direc-
tors.
"We are not proceeding with the
sale of any land at Parkhill at the
present time," said Tom Prout,
ABCA general manager.
The decision was based on sever-
al factors, including availability of
sanitary services, zoning, revenue-
sharing and procedural guidelines.
Retaining their current uses, the
parcels of land include one proper-
ty that houses the Parkhill Conser-
vation Area workshop, another that
is leased to a private tenant, and
-others which the conservation au-
tthority continues to maintain.
