English is a strange lan-
guage! Consider the words
through, though, thought,
bought, ought, wrought,
dough, enough, plough.
Isn't it a wonder how
many pronunciations there
are for that small group of
letters ough". I wonder
how many people have read
the story the Three Billy Goats Grough? Oops! 1 mean Gruff!
Ppoughteightoughps! When I first saw that word, it caused
quite a bit of anxiety. I have always considered myself a fairly
fluent reader, but that had me stumped. Finally 1 was told, pp -
p as in apples, ough - o as in though, t, eight - as in 8, ough - as
in dough, ps - s as in psychology. Potatoes! How much easier
that seems.
Crossword puzzles, anagrams and other word games can he
fun.
• What eight letter English word can you think of with only'
one vowel?
• Can you think of an English word that contains all of the
vowels in the proper order, a, e, i, o, u?
• From "Gallimaufry To Go", by J. Bryan III, "What do these
words have in common? hijack, canopy, stupid, crabcake, first,
calmness, afghan?"
• What English word keeps its original pronunciation even
when the last four letters arc dropped?
• What state name contains only the vowel 'e', and which one
only the vowel 'i'?
• What do these say? SA? NME? XLNC?
• From "Crazy English", by Richard Lederer, "Which com-
mon English word continues five personal pronouns?"
There are no word games in this recipe. It is very straight
forward. Thanks Alma! .

Answers to word games
Strength. Facetious (There may be others). All the words
contain three alphabetically consecutive letters. Queue, Ten-
nessee and Mississippi which each contain fourtatfthesame
vowels. There is a suburb of Sydney, Australia, which has a
name containing 8 o's! Woolloomoolloo! Essay, enemy and
excellency. Ushers (Us, she, he, her, hers).
