Herrington's 71 wins
Ironwood Invitational
EXETER - Ironwood Golf Course held its annual Men's Invitational
Golf Tournament on Wednesday and tough pin placements and swirling
winds made things tough for the golfers.
Ivan Herrington of Dashwood was the winner as he shot a par round of
71, six strokes ahead of Dave Cows of London.
Dave Carver, Brad Daters and Wayne Casey had a three-way playoff for
the 'II' flight championship. All three tied with an 82. But it was Carver
winning theplayoff and Dalers, was the low net of the 'B' flight.
The 'C' flight low grass was won by Jim Vickers of Greenhills with an
83 followed by Dashwood's Ray Webb who shot an 89.
Bill Thompson of Exeter was the low net winner at 66 and Sid Daley,
celebrating his 80th birthday, was second.
Sponsors of the event were Strictly Golf, Becker's Farm Equipment, Al-
goma Tire, Dinneys, Country Flowers, Big V, Exeter Honda, HMP, Enc

Mohawks golf tourney
raises nearly $3,500
ST JOSEPHS - Players And
coaching staff from the Exeter Mo-
hawks Senior 'A' Hockey Club
raised nearly $3.500 on the week-
end to help with the expenses of the
1992-93 hockey season.
Saturday at the Bayview Golf
Course, 93 golfers took part in a
Texas Scramble.
Mohawks' forward Tim Shields
along with Rick Lambert, Rob
Kingshot and Shayne Kyle were
the winners as they combined to
shoot a 13 under par. Shields also
won the closest to the pin contest.
Second place went to the four-
some of Dave Holizmann, Mohawk
Kevin McArter, Dan Brintnell and
Greg Lingman who shot an 11 un-
der. Four teams were nine under
and two others were seven under.
Organisers ware pleased with the
turnout and delighted with the roast
beef dower catered by Barry Hod-
gins.
Eagles handle Centennials easily
EXETER - Despite losing 6-0 to visiting Sarnia Ea-
gles Sunday afternoon the Exeter Centennials did play
a strong second half, allowing just one goal.
With centre forward Chuck Walker on the sidelines
due to an ejection for arguing with the referee, the
Centennials went with just 10 players and kept the Ea-
gles at hay for most of the second 45 minute half.
"With one short, it didn't seemed to matter," said Ex-
eter player -coach Dick Lord.
The Centennials are still struggling in the Western
Ontario Soccer League second division and arc win-
less going into the final flue games of the season.
Exeter will host Strathroy on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the
Canner's Field.
Sarnia took a quick lead less than five minutes into
Sunday's contest as Exeter could not get the hall out of
their own end. The ball seemed to go off of a Centen-
Fastball
mals fullback and past goalie Gary Wilson.
Wilson was playing in net In replacement of the in-
jured Craig Winbow who was shaken up in the previ-
ous league game. Exeter had. a short bench as starters
Charlie Wise and Peter Hakvoort were also absent.
"They're three starters we certainly do miss," said
Lord.
He added he was pleased with Wilson's perfor-
mance.
"He was just told he was playing Thursday night."
Shortly after Sarnia scored their first goal, Pat Don-
nelly was given a yellow card for a hauling a man
down just outside the 18 -yard box which set up a free
kick.
The Eagles failed to cash in on that but did score
twice, just 30 seconds apart to take a comfortable lead.
Neil's homer wins game
EXETER - Catcher Brian Noyes
put the tag on Dave Ropp at the
plate in the bottom of the ninth in-
ning to stop the tying run from
sconng as the Exeter Chrysler im-
perials heat Milverton Magnums 2-
1 Thursday night.
While Noyes made the big play
defensively, Mike Neil launched a
home run over the center field
.fence to give the imperials the first
game of the best -of -three South
Pert!. Men's Fasthall League
playoff genes.
GameTwo of the series was
scheduled to be played in Milver-
ton last night.
The visiting Magnums got on the
board early in the top of the open-
ing inning when Ropp struck out
but was safe at first on a pitch that
got by Noyes. Ropp stole second,
went to third on another wild pitch
and scored when Randy Wicks
tapped one back to Exeter pitcher
Derwvn Hodgins.
The Imperials carne right back in
their half of the first, tying the
game when shortstop Dan Hey-
wood led off with a base hit, moved
on Hodgins' sacrifice bunt and
scored on a Graham Nesbiu single.
it was tied at 1-1 into the bottom
of the fifth when, with two But, and
two strikes on him, Neil hit the
game winning homer.
Milverton threatened in the sev-
enth when Don Leis led off with a
single, stole second, went to third
on a wild pitch and with two nut,
almost scored when Terry Yung -
blot hit one back to the mound.
But instead of throwing to first,
Hodgins tossed to the plate and
Noyes put the tag on Lets. Another
'close play at home came in the bot-
tom of the ninth when Ropp led off
with a single, advanced to second
on a Leis base hit and went to third
on a passed ball.
He tried to go home when an-
other ball got by Noyes but the Ex-
eter catcher won the footrace to the
plate and Ropp was called out
while sliding into home.
Hodgins went the distance on the
mound for the Imperials as he
struck out 16 and gave up just four
