President upset Dear Mr. Sports Editor: Or should 1 say baseball and hockey editor because you sure seem limited in your editorial comments to those two sports. A sports editor is supposed to repre- sent all sports in his area. As president of the Exeter soc- cer club I take exception to your question in last week's paper in which you insinuate that there we problems in soccer. What is wrong with soccer? Mr. Editor there is nothing wrong with soccer in Ex- eter. 1 don't know where you get your information, certainly not from mc. Last year the Exeter soc- cer club had a registration of 261 kids spread over 13 teams. In 1992 we had final registration of 269 kids spread out over 15 teams in both boys and girls divisions. In my calculations that is a 3 per- cent increase rather than a 25 percent decrease in registration. But then maybe you have a better calculator than 1 have. As far as the boys 17 and under soccer finals is concerned, it rained a lot the Friday night before the tournament and the Grand Bend convener. who rents the field for his tournament, decided against us- ing the field and causing permanent damage to it. It was strictly a con- vener decision because of weather conditions. Soccer has had its problems with you in the past and we have tried to ignore you the way you have ig- nored soccer but when you start to run our. organization down. we will not stand for it. You can not say anything posi- tive about soccer. so you have to find something negative to shed a bad light on an organization that is very healthy and well run by a lot of volunteers. It is our luck that Ray Lewis, a person that knows something about soccer works for your paper. At least through his stories we have had some positive exposure. In ending, Editor, next time you need some facts to base your opin- ions on please feel free to call me and don't grab them out of thin air. On behalf of the Exeter soccer club Martin J. deBruyn President NO MORE READING T-SHIRTS? If the trend continues we mar- ried men, who lost our civil rights at the altar, will have to walk about staring at a spot on the ground about a foot ahead of us, never making eye contact, or any other con- tact for that matter.
