Our flight originated at Toronto Inter- national and ter- minated at To- ronto International. As we pay our own expanses, 1 checked into and found that after the U.S.A. persons converted to Canadian dollars they also re- ceived in my calculation a further $417.00 savings per person by proof of U.S.A. citizenship. CQM M LINITY Letter to Edito The cost of being Canadian 1 contacted Canadian Airlines Public Relations prior to (light date and told them of the unfairness and also gave names of the other per- sons in the group for clarification. They told me a story of special rates for U.S.A. citizens only but would look into it further. Many weeks later 1 received a copy of the letter sent to an incor- rect address and 1 enclose same. In summary my calculations in- form me I paid $834.00 more per couple because we are Canadian citizens. E.A. Potter Dear Mr. Potter. Thank you for your phone call regarding Canadian Airlines fares from U.S. cities. Please accept our apology for the delay caused due to mailing the original letter to the incorrect address. Seat availabili- ty on sale fares, and on those of- fered in the United States at spe- cial rates, is rigidly controlled to ensure only surplus seats are uti- lised. Market forces determine pricing and product, and we must remain competitive with other airlines op- erating to our destinations. Cana- dian Airlines considers the United States as a separate cStchment area and uses surplus capacity to supplement revenue on internation- al flights and maintain a profile in thi marketplace. In order to ac- cess potential U.S.-originating traffic to top off us Canadusn flights, Canadian Airlines has set a pricing level in the U.S. that is de- signed to attract leisure traffic. That traffic is usually prepared to he inconvenienced by Customs de- layt and.indeirct routing for a less- er price than that which may be available on direct services from their point oforigin. Competitive pricing action ena- bles Canadian carriers to retain market presence when demand for service is lower, and enables air- lines to promote Canada's airports as gateways to Europe and the Pa- cific Rim. The benefits of the latter initiative extends to other business- es in Canada. Airline marketing is an extremely complex procedure since airline !packages and even transborder seats are highly. perishable This I shopping.
