From September 8-12 at the Hu- ron Park Arena in Stephen Town- ship, players between the ages of 7 and 14 will be put through the pac- '"bs by head instructor Terry Bourne. Bourne, played in the American Hockey League back in the days when there were just six NHL teams and he says this school will not only help players but coaches as well. "When I agreed to help, I had the coaches in mind as well as the kids," said Bourne. "What you want to do is maybe help the coaches learn a few drills." he emphasized the main focus of this school will not be power skat- ing but rather, working with the puck. "It's not so much power skating although skating is the most impor- tant part of hockey." He hopes those players that do attend the school, especially the younger ones will already be fairly comfortable on skates and there- fore will be able to accomplish the drills. "If they can skate, we can teach them something. A good skating seven-year-old is fine for this type of school." Although there is not a special session for goaltenders, Bourne Michelle now calling the balls and strikes EXETER - Strike three, foul ball, you're out. These are just a few of the new words Michelle McNeilly has gotten used to saying this past summer. McNealy recently moved from in front of the plate, where she was a player, to putting on a mask and calling this balls and strikes as an umpire. The 12 year-old Exeter girl is behind the plate while her dad, John um- pires the bases. "I know him a lot better, and I can talk to him," she said about consult- ing for certain calls during the game. --7 Michelle has Cerebral Palsy, but in no way has that stopped her from competing in sports. She used to play softball but felt it was time to turn her enthusiasm towards another part of the game. "Since 1 liked ball, dad thought I should start umpiring." She admits playing would be difficult. "It would be harder and they could get me out faster because 1 can't run." Umpires have to always watch out for foul balls coming back at them. It's dangerous. but Michelle seems to be getting used to it. "I got one on the knee, one on the foot. I get hit every game but I guess that's what I have to do. I should start wearing shin pads. like goalie pads," she said. Michelle wouldn't have to go far to get goalie pads as she plays goal for an Exeter and District Ringette Association team. Last year in the tourna- ment in Hensall, she turned away as many as 30 shots a game. Just goes to prove, you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to i4 Michelle McNeilly has Just completed her first year as an um- pire. ..rill............iii...i..........ii....iiiiiiiw, 0 Lucan Athletic Association j 0 0Saturday, August 8 -10 a.m. to 12 noon 0 Wednesday, August 12 - 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. 0 0 Saturday, August 15 -10 a.m. to 12 noon 0 Committee Room - Lucas Arena 0 0 Please label each piece of equipment with name, sin and 0 price. But if you are a goaltender plan- ning to attend the school, don't think it will be easy. "1 believe goalies should have puck handling skills to," said Bourne. On goaltending, he said it's .im- portant for young puck stoppers to have instruction from one person and not several since it could be confusing. Prior to moving back to Exeter, Bourne spent many hours assisting with the minor hockey program in Kingsville. The school will be divided into three age groups and ice time at nights will begin at 5 p.m. Players will be required to wear complete equipment. Parents of EMHA players re- ceived registration forms last week. 14th annual: The Stephen Town- ship Arena will be hosting its 14th Annual Power Skating and Funda- mentals of Hockey school from Au- gust 17 to August 28. One of the instructors, Rob Funs - ton, said this is primarily a skating session. "We do a little bit of shooting but we don't concentrate on slapshoLs. Mostly wristshoLs, backhanders and passing," he said. This popular school is broken into three different groups. From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. will be the beginners followed by 6-9 year-olds and then nine years old and up. As far as skating goes, Funston -says, "everthing involves balance. That's what it comes down to." For more information about the Stephen Township school call. 228- 6425. Derek Greenlee, left; of the Shamrock Hockey School helps a young player. Exeter is now 16-3 in the South Petit Men's Fastball League and will find out this week who they meet in the fust round of the playoffs. Thursday night's game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Tavis- tock's Randy Lalige struck out but went all the way to second after the ball got past Imperials'.catcher Brian Noyes. Lalige put the visitors on the board when pitcher Ross Yalitzi singled up the middle. Exeter came back in their half of the fifth when catcher Brian Noyes had his second base hit of the night. Graham Nesbitt went in to run and he came home when Hyde lifted his triple into left field. Tavistock tried to tie it up in the sixth when Fred Bender led off with a double, got to third on some outfield confusion by the Imperials and tried to score on a long fly ball. But Hyde made a perfect throw to the plate and Nesbitt slapped on the tag, preventing the Merchants from taking the lead. The winning run came in the bottom of the second when Dan Heywood popped one up in the deep part of the infield which was not caught and he managed to go all the way to third. A Darren Neil fly ball to left field scored Heywood. • i Exeter Minor Hockey Association and Exeter Ringette Association Combined 6E6ISTBATIONS Thurs., August 20 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. At South Huron Roc Centre Used equipment exchange available Exeter Minor Baseball Assoc. would like to thank the following sponsors for their sup- port of our Tyke (5 -Pitch and Rookie -ball) tourna- ment.
