"Best" Canadian comedy at Huron Playhouse
By Adrian Harte
T -A Editor
GRAND BEND - Billed as "the definitive Canadian comedy" and
"possibly the best Canadian comedy ever written", Jitters hit the stage
of the Huron Country Playhouse last Wednesday evening.
Using the play -within -a -play format, Jitters opens on stage virtually
identically to the British farce Noises Off. The audience witness what
appears to be the main action on stage, a rather dry family drama, only
to have the "director" (played by Richard Kovsky) step out of the au-
dience and begin calling instructions to the actors. From there we are
led into the behind the scenes world of the Canadian theatre, witb.alL
the pettiness, tensions, politics, and worries about success or failure
that goes along with the stage life.
The play starts rather slowly. In fact, we have a rather dislikeable
bunch of characters on stage for the first act- At times, the play they
are rehearsing seems more interesting than their private lives. In the
second act, however, they come more alive, more lovable, as they fret
away behind stage on opening night.
The star of the show (played by Nonnie Griffin) feels upstaged by
Patrick (Desmond Ellis), who in turn resents her star billing. Phil
(John Gardiner) still fears forgetting his lines, and Tom (Jody Racicot )
is nowhere to be found with only minutes to go till curtain.
Naturally, the absurdity of the situation takes over. The playwnght
(Craig Eldridge) nearly fords himself having to goin in Tom's place.
The rest of the cast offer their support, only to quickly pull it away
when Tom arrivts, albeit drunk.
"It'll be just our luck he brings up on a critic," moans Patrick.
"Get them first is what I say," retorts Phil.
The third act brings back all the hopes and fears as the reviews are
read and their play begins to take its course.
The best performance of the show goes to John Gardiner, whose
vain, hypochondriac Phil leaves the audience in stitches with his tales
of woe - worth the admission price alone.
Richard Kovsky fails to convince to the. role of the director, George
Desmond Ellis (left), John Gardiner, and Nonnie Griffin in
Jitters, playing at the Huron Country Playhouse until Sat-
urday.
(the show's real director is Sean Mulcahy). Kovsky is too cowboyish
for the part, which seems to call for a more sympathetic character to
commiserate with the actors.
Overall, it's nice to see the Huron Country Playhouse get away from
us favourite Broadway hits and risk a Canadian play for its conserva-
tive audience. It's Just hard to believe this is the best Canadian comedy
extant. Jitters is worth a look, however, for those interested in the
angst of the Canadian stage, while at the same time getting rl good
laugh. The play runs until this Saturday. August 15.
Council told apartment
conversion rules shouldn't
apply to Exeter
EXETER - New provincial regu-
lations to encourage more apan-
ment conversions of homes might
be a good idea for Toronto, but
could pose problems for towns
such as Exeter, town administrator
Rick Huntley told Exeter council lo
last Tuesday's meeting.
Hundey explained to council that
Exeter has already stricter rules on
apartment conversion than outlined
in the new government plan.
For example, Exeter's zoning by-
law requires apartments in houses
be a minimum of 50 square metres
in size, whereas the proposed legis-
lative amendments require only 25
square metres for bachelor units
and 32 square metres for other
aparUnents. Exeter also has restric-
tions on lot size that the province
would not require.
Hundey said the town's regula-
tions are to maintain the quality of
Exeter's residential areas.
"Something that makes sensc in
the City of Toronto may not make
sense in the Town of Exeter," said
Hundey.
Hundey asked council for permis-
sion to send a letter to the ministry
outlining his concerns, which coun-
cil approved.
Hundey said the province's need
for new apartment conversions only t
really applies to Metropolitan To-
ronto. Elsewhere, the province ap-
pears to be well housed at least un-
til inc end of the decade, he
explained.
