Lucan woman top fundraiser in
Middlesex Rides against Cancer
LUCAN - A Lucan woman has been rewarded for
her continued efforts to raise money for local Can-
cer Societies for the past 16 years.
Patricia Hodgins was presented with certificates
and a bicycle helmet in recognition of her participa-
tion in Great Rides Against Cancer since 1976. Bill
Smith, chairman of the Lucan cancer campaign said
that Hodgins' contribution to the organization's
fundraising has been significant- Her current goals
is to raise over $1,000 each year, a figure which she
has easily met.
Hodgins, who has learning disabilities herself,
started riding her bicycle for cancer research in
1976 with the Lucan ride, and has since ridden in
the Strathroy and Ailsa Craig (Pinery Park) events.
"She works really hard and u adds up," said
Smith.
"It's her project," said her proud mother Jean.
"She goes out and gets all her sponsors. I'm just her
banker."
Smith presented Hodgins with the certificates of
appreciation and her helmet on behalf of the Lon-
don Middlesex Cancer Society.

GRANTON - "Team up with Je-
sus" was the theme for the Vaca-
tion Bible School held at the Gran-
ton_ United Church last week July
27 to 31. flighty-aoven .children
were enrolled and took part in the
Bible stories, crafts, games and
songs related to the theme.
Those who made the week possi-
ble by teaching and assisting in-
clude Carolyn Bryan, Jennifer
Blake, Jill Muir, Maggie Ostler,
Carrie Currah, April Bryan, Cheryl
Fraser, Becky .Muir, Carolyn
Walder, Ann Zwaan, Joan Swider-
ski, Kathryn Harding, Cathie
Westman, Lynda Blom, Disuse
Blake, Jennifer Walden, Jane Gar-
rett. Lorraine Broughton, Lynn
Shainline, Paula Pincombe, direc-
tor Mary Waters and Pastor Nor-
malie Voakes.
At the closing program on Fri-
day, the children sang the songs
they had learned and certificates of
award were presented. A collec-
tion "a gift of love" was taken up
to be sent to homeless and or-
phaned children in third world
countries.
At the Si Thomas' Anglican
Church on Sunday, August 2 Rob-
ert Parkinson led the service of
Morning prayer. Paul Acres read
the lessons and Sylvia Beason led
the reading of the Psalm. Paul
commented on Psalm 28 conclud-
ing that enrichment comes from
forgiving one another.
Velma Hodgins was the organ-
ist.
There was no service at the Unit-
ed Church on Sunday as the minis-
ter is on vacation.

Church on Sunday while visiting
with his stepmother Ethel Crouch.

success
CRBDITON - Last week's five-
day Vacation Bible School at Cre-
ditoti -United 'China was very suc-
cessful with more than 100 area
youngsters participating.
Rev. Ed Laiastnanis went on to
thank director JoAnne Pickering,
all of ,the teachers and the ladies of
the UCW for their part in making
the school so successful.
The theme this year was Adven-
tures on Son Mountain based on the
Book of Proverbs.
Karl and Doris A. Obmayer re-
turned recently from a tour of the
Atlantic pmvinces, Spots visited in-
cluded Plattsburgh, Bar Harbour,
Yarmouth, Halifax, Port Hawkes-
bury, Charlottetown, St. John, Fred-
ericton, Tadousaac and Quebec
City.
Some of the highlights of the tour
were the ferry rifles across Lake
Champlain, Bar Harbour, Maine to
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Prince Ed-
ward Island and Cape Totmentine.
Other places of interest included
Peggy's Cove, Sherbrooke Village,
Alexander Graham Bell Muaetun,
Anne of Green Gables home and
the musical Anne of Green Gables.
The Cabot Trail has been de-
scribed as the most spectacular
drive in North America. The Mag-
netic Hill ride was very exciting
and the boat ride from Tadoussac
for whale watching was something
wonderful. The weather was very
favourable for the entire tour.

EXETER - The Exeter Oddfel-
lows and the Hutrtanitarian Branch
of the order recently made a dona-
tion to the South Huron Hospital
Association.

Shipka by Annie Morenz
SHIPKA - The annual Shipka
picnic will be held Tuesday Au-
gust 11, at 7 p.m. at the Communi-
ty Centre. There will be games for
all. Ladies are asked to please
bring a pie. A fee will be charged
for each family this year.
Annie and Angie Zielman, host-
ed a Zietman family gathering last
Sunday. All of Annie's children
and grandchildren attended. This
was Gerald and Mary Ellen Ziel-
man, with Justin, Emily and Ger-
ard of Shipka area. Ruth and Jerry
Zehr, with Mandy, Anneka, and
Samuel, Debbie and Roger Ward,
with Ashley, Amelia and McLynn,
all of Zurich, Susie and Wayne
Robson, with Colin, Sheina and
Breagh of Essex.
Other guests were Pastor Paul
Brunner and his wife Grace, of the
Mennonite Church, of Zurich.
