Express score nine runs in fourth inning
LISTOWEL - The Exeter Express split their Great
Lakes Senior Baseball League games last week. beat-
ing Strathroy 12-3 on Tuesday but coming up short
against Listowel 6-2 two days later.
A big fourth inning helped Exeter on Tuesday as
they trailed 3-1 at the end of the first frame but came
back and platedninerwis in the fourth.
The big -inning stared when Walt-Pluicirlsom and
D'Arcy Martin led off with back-to-back singles. Ron
Elliot was safe on a fielders' choice and then the Ex-
press came up with five straight hits.
Barry Baynham singled, Marty Merner and Rick
Boon had doubles and then Kevin Hern had a triple.
Brian Rivard smashed a triple and then, with two out,
Martin went to the plate for the second time in the in-
ning and came up with a double followed by a Rob
Dickey home run.
Exeter added two more in the eighth off of three sin-
gles and a double by Martin.
Paul Gilmour started on the mound, struggled and
was relieved by Bill Glover and finally Dave Atthill.
Listowel 6, Exeter 2
On Thursday, the hosts accred three rums in the fila
inning off of a couple of singles and a home. run.
The Express got one rim in the top of the first when
Dickey led off with a single, stole second and scored
on Boon's double. In the fifth, Doug Schade walked,
advanced on a Barry Baynham ground out and scored
when Boon singled to collect his second it i of the
game.
Is interest in junior ball dieing?
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - In the winter, athletes
in their late teens and early twen-
ties are very keen to play hockey.
It's the Canadian sport, and eve-
ryone wants to either excel or get
as much ice time as possible.
Baseball on the other hand, ap-
pears to be losing its appeal.
Wednesday night, the Exeter Co -
Op Juniors had just nine players.
No subsutuuons and no margin for
nsk of injury
What is a about junior baseball
or rather those who play it ,that
doesn't make a appealing?
"1 think it's the age group. They
have jobs to do," said Exeter coach
Jim Russell.
"That age group is tough. Some
of them are playing hockey now."
One obvious problem, as far as
getting enough players to come to
the park on a regular basis, is sum-
mer jobs. Most week night games
begin at 6:30 p.m. and getting
there on time is tough for those
who have summer jobs which usu-
ally mean very unusual hours.
"There arc so many different
things they can do. You can't
blame them entirely," added Rus-
sell.
Exeter first baseman Doug Clark,
who has played for the hockey Jun-
ior 'D' Hawks for several years,
hinted the lack of eagerness could
have something to do with the big
age gap.•
"We've got guys that are 15 and
others that arc 21. It's a big differ-
ence. After the game the guys can't
go to the same places." said Clark.
He toted how it is difficult to
have a regular infield as there is al-
ways someone different.
"You know every night there is
going to be enough guys there," he
said of hockey.
With two players leaving to go to
the Stratford Junior Hil ors, others
showing up occasionally, and even
some quitting has depleted the
ranks.
Exeter has had to call up several
bantam players and although only
15 years -old, they have fit in and
done the job.
Russell is showing signs of frus-
tration and although this year it
seems to be an uphill battle just to
get enough players to a game, the
future does look bright.
Looking a little confused during Wednesday's junior baseball
game in Exeter was Mark Glavin who was tossed out at third
base. The locals Coop Juniors played Listowel to a 44 tie.
fr
With two bantam teams, Exeter
should be well -stocked with young
talent for it junior program in the
future.
Lucan 11, St. Marys 10
It took 11 innings to determine a
winner in this one on Sunday and it
was Scott Smith's single which
won the game.
Paul Smith came on to pitch in
relief and went three strong innings
and picked up the win.
Lucan erupted for four runs in the
sixth inning to take a 10-7 lead on a
solo homer by Paul Smith and a
three -run shot by Mike Munro.
Lucan 5, Clinton 1
On Wednesday in Clinton, Lu -
can's Cory Burtch had a home run
to lead the offense while Man Mun-
ro pitched five innings to get the
win on the mound.
Scott Smith had a double while
Paul Smith, Mike Munro and Brett
Revington added singles.
The two teams also played the fi-
nal few innings of a game which
was tied earlier this season but Lu -
can came up on the short side of
this one.
Listowel 11, Lucan 5
Lucan started what was to be a
long week with a loss on Tuesday
as they led 5-1 at one point but
were beaten by Listowel.
Pitcher Greg Bastian was doing
well and allowed only five hits
while striking out 10 but Listowel
got to him and scored six trouts with
two out.

Royals win
own tourney
EXETER - It took a few weeks to
do it, but the Exeter Royals man-
aged to complete their own tourna-
ment Friday night against Lieury.
The four team tournament was
held earlier this month but bad
weather forced the postponement of
the floral game.
On Friday, Steve Stire and Steve
Cook scored in the final inning to
give the Royals a slim 4-3 victory.
Second baseman Chris McDonald
hada base hit to help bring in a run.
Sean McCann was a big hitter as
he had three singles. Exeter trailed
3-2 at one time.
Exeter 7, Atwood 0
Cook had a double and a single
last Monday night as the Royals
won this league game.
McCann and McDonald were
also hot at the plate as they each
connected with a pair of hits. Dar-
ren Kints and Gavin Snell both had
extra base hits but were tossed out.
