Times Advocate, 1992-07-29, Page 9From our kitchen to yours By T.A. ghost writer Heavenly Devine V -a -c -a -t -i -o -n. What a lovely eight letter word. A two week period that eve- ryone looks forward to, and spends the other 50 weeks of the year planning for right? However, those sun filled two weeks in cottage country can quick- ly turn into the worst two weeks of your Iifc. As we were about to find out! The quaint fully furnished cottage that sounded so terrific in the brochure, turned out to be little more than a shack, with cracks between the floor boards almost large enough for the baby to drop through! Ah well, at last we didn't need a dust pan after we swept the floor, everything just fell down those -cracks. But deep in my heart i knew that if so much can go down between those cracks, lots of less than wonderful things .could crawl -up -through -them! The windows had never seen glass, and the screens had so many holes that they might just as well not have been there. Each of the two bedrooms came equipped with not so sturdy looking bunk beds, and the kids both clamboured for the top, only because they don't want to be on the bottom when the beds come crashing down. The naked light bulb swinging by the frayed wire from the rafters didn't inspire a lot of confi- dence. It was easily accessible to the water, but the swampy area which sat two feet from the back door was not the ideal place for swimming (only mosquito breeding). The nearest sandy beach was two miles down the road! The first night 1 snuggled down into bed. I insisted on the top bunk too, only to hear the ominous whooshing of wings. I pulled the sheets tightly over my head, and yelled "bats!!" at my husband. Why wasn't he springing up and going into action to get rid of it? 1 rolled over to ask and he merely said that maybe it would go away if we were quiet. By this time daughter number two was awake and screaming and daughter number one was running around with the broom trying to hit the offending interloper! I shouted to her to cover her head, because the bat might get into her hair. At this piece of motherly wisdom. my husband decided he had to set the record straight about bats getting into people's hair, but how do you reason with one hysterical daughter. another who seems to be screaming for bat blood, and a wife who will not take the pillow from over her head. Finally, after chasing after the bat for several hours (Well it seemed 1 was under the pillow that long) and trying unsuccessfully to rid ourselves of the unwant- ed visitor, hubby suggested we tum on all the lights and open both doors and sec if it would fly outside. Cool heads pre- vailed and our noctural aviator was gone. I just know I didn't sleep a wink for the rest of that night. waiting for its return. I think that a family vacation should be just that and mother should have some time off as well.
