Minimize dangers of fiowing
grain, advises Safety Association
Last week's Times Advocate featured three article,,
-dieting with the -upcoming annual Farm Safety Week
•hotly 25-31. This week, we look at Me 'wain focus of
illus year's safety week, the dangers of flowing grain.
SEAFORTH ,.. As Steve Matisse, con-
sultant for the Farm Safety Association,
points out, many fanners are not quite
aware how quickly they can become
trapped in flowing grain.
This past year, eight fanners in Oma -
no underestimated those dangers >tnd
died as a result. Overall, that fatality
figure is down a tittle from past years;
"but it's still eight more than we would
like to se,"--said-Matisse.
Matisse demonstrated with a scale
model of a gravity box filled with corn
and a model of a man standing in it. He
opened the hopper, and almost immediately the man
was drawn down into the grain.
"It only takes a few seconds and a person is com-
pletely buried and covered up," said Matisse.
Because the flowing grain traps the legs, the farmer
is drawn under quickly. The weight of the grain is
against the chest so the lungs can no longer draw m tar.
Suffocation is inevitable. •
Victims- of this type of accident are not only the
farmers who are trying to free up the grain, but also
children.
"Every couple of years there's children who get into
grain bins and think its a good place to play," said Ma -
Rules to avoid such tragedies include making sure
grain machinery can't be started up while working in
the grain. Also by working in pairs, a partner outside
the bin can make sure no one else opens up the hopper
or starts machinery while'work is taking place inside.
Better yet, satid-Matisse is not to stand in the grain at
all.
"Minimize the hazard by not going in there," he said.
George Underwood, present of the Ontario Part
Safety Association, explained that this years safety
theme was decided upon because of the realization that
many grain storage structures in Ontario are aging.
Some of the equipment, after being in use 15-30 years,
is not as safe as it used to be.
"We realized there are dangers out there," said Un-
derwood.
Many silos are in danger of collapse, due to deterio-
ration, and use outside those specified by design.
Underwood said last year's safety program on the
handling of large bales showed great success.
The Harry► Safety Association are also looking Mu)
used equipment sales and are supporting the introduc-
tion of legislation requiring all equipment sold to have 'II
proper shielding, and . all safety warning decals re- !
placed. Generic decals are also being developed, said
Underwood.
There is also going to be a requirement to have an
owners manual supplied with all equipment.
"Machinerythat has all the shielding and decals in
place will be worth more," noted Underwood, saying it
will pay the farmer to maintain those features on his
equipment:
In fact, said Underwood, the Association found some
examples of new equipment being sold without ade-
quate safety shielding only last year. However, that
equipment was not from one of the major brand names,
he said.

Good news for swine industry
OTTAWA - A ruling by the Can-
ada -U.S. Free Trade Agreement bi-
national panel is good news for the
Canadian swine industry. The panel
-- set up under the agreement to
study commercial disputes between
both countries -- ordered the United
Slates to remand its decision to take
rote ac count Canada's National Tri-
partite Stabilization Program in the
calculation of subsidies.
This decision had resulted in the
U.S. imposing a countervailing duty
on imports of live swine from Cana-
da. The panel's ruling applies to du-
ties imposed from April, 1988 to
March 1989.
