Royals come back to beat St. Marys EXETER - Talk about a dramatic finish to a ball game. Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning with two out, the Exeter Royals battled back to beat St. Marys and win the boys division of the Us - borne Minor Softball Tournament Sunday afterno,:e. Exeter reached the final by win- ning three straight games in the four -team event. Dozens of spectators watched the final and viewed the Royals slip- ping behind by a couple of runs but in the bottom of the sixth (seven in- ning game), pitcher Steve Cook started a big rally going with a sin- gle. Sean McCann followed with a single and then Chris McDonald and Ken Hines reached base due to St. Marys infield errors. Darren Kints blasted a double to score a couple of rues and a Ben Arm- strong single plated two more. Catcher Gavin Snell made a couple of good defensive plays as he tossed out a St. Marys base run- ner in the second and again in the fourth. However, he was ejected from the game after a sixth inning collision at the plate. If there was an MW award for the tournament, Armstrong would have received a few votes. The third baseman was flawless in the final game in during the tour- nament he was 7 -for -13 at the plate including a double, triple and a home run. Exeter 3, Lieury 1 This was a real defensive battle in which Cook did not allow a hit until the seventh inning. Exeter got a run in the second when Armstrong singled and scored on a Trevor Taylor base hit. Walks and errors gave the Royals a couple more in the third. Exeter 15, Hibbert 5 The Royals got off to a very good start as Armstrong, Kints, Taylor and McDonald all had extra base hits in•the fust inning. Kints had two home runs in this one while McDonald and Arm- strong also had three hits, the latter clubbing a round -tripper. Dennis Gower went the distance on the mound, striking out five. Exeter 4, St. Marys 3 St. Marys jumped out to a big 3-1 lead in the first inning but the Roy- als chipped away and in the fifth, Steve Stire scored the winning run after he singled and advanced on base hits by Ken Hines and McCann. EXETER - Seven runs in the sec- ond inning and eight in the fifth helped Exeter win the Usborne Mi- nor Softball League tournament here Sunday night. Going undefeated in the two-day event, Exeter beat Cenualia 23-13 to capture the 20 year old tourna- ment which changes location each year. This game was a lot closer than the final score indicated as it was tied 13-13 after four complete in- nings. But in the fifth, Exeter sent 12 batters to the plate, scored eight runs and hung onto the lead for the rest of the game. The Exeter half of the fifth inning saw Terri Snell lead off with a sin- gle, Jodi Hamilton had a base hit, Jana Webster and Dana Regier both walked, Chris Morgan, Janice Sanders, and Candace Miller all ,2111XIMIMAIntatatil •Oftirdisisien Winne' Exeter23, Centralia 13 "B'Final Hensall 7, Hibbert 5 Other scores Centralia 12, Hensel! 6 Crediton 35, Zurich 3 Exeter 9, Hibbert 2 Usborne 33, Grand Bend 0 Centralia 17, Crediton 3 Exeter 16, Usborne 11 Hensel! 14, Zurich 8 Hibbert 34, Grand Bend 17 Boys division Final Exeter 9, St. Marys 5 Other scores Exeter 4, St. Marys 3 Lieury 15, Hibbert 3 St. Marys 7,Lieury:6 Exeter 15, Hibbcrt'5 St. Marys 15 Hibbert'8 Exeter 3, Lieury 1 Exeter Royals won the boys title.
