Her efforts in such an endeavour had been prompted by a per- sonal tragedy, that of the death of her son at age one and one half years due to contaminated milk. It was her belief that through this organization rural women could discuss their problems and work to- gether to improve their standard of homemaking and citizenship. Women's Institutes across the province joined togeth- er in 1919 to become known as the Federated Women's. institutes of On- tario. Later that same year a national organization was formed under the approval of the Minister of Agricul- ture. Today there are ap- proximately 40,000 Feder- ated Women's Institute of Canada members in more than 2000 branches across Canada, with a national of- fice in Ottawa. The organization went world wide in 1930. having "developed from the desire of country women all over the world to come closer to- gether in friendship, to pool their knowledge and work toward a better world." There have many accom- plishments of the Federated Women's Institute of Onta- rio over the years through resolutions to sectors of the gavernment. On the local scene, three Women's Institutes were formed in Usborne Town- ship: Kirkton W.I. in 1902, Hurondale W.I. in 1991, Elimville W.I. in 1948. Activities undertaken by these clubs have included: - involvement in and sponsorship of local fairs - support of 4H clubs - erecting historical plaques such as the Timo- thy Eaton sign in Kirkton - public library support and donations - work for the well. being of the soldiers in the Sec- ond World War - introduction and finan- cial sponsorship of music instruction in the public school system. - writing of Tweedsmuir Histories for the local area in the 1940s, which are the forerunners of Usbotne his- tory until the publication of "Between the Fences" in 1992. ' On the occasion of Us- borne's ISO's birthday, the Institutes arc sponsoring a quilt draw.- Each Institute quilted a quilt for the draw with materials paid for from draw proceeds. Tick- ets are only $1.00. and gives the purchaser a chance on the three quilts, with the draw to be made Friday. July 24. Money raised form the draw has already assisted Usbome's celebrations. Supplies were purchased with which students at Us - borne Central School have constructed their own com- memorative quilt, with quilting assistance from In- stitute members, as well as the purchase of frames for pictures taken during Pio- neer Days. Copies of "Be- tween the Fences" were do- nated to Usbome Central School and Precious Blood School and further projects are under consideration at time of press. This organization, ap- proaching its 100th anni- versary. evolved from com- munity spirit to better the life of biose living in their neighborhood and around the world. As they continue , to uphold their pledge "For . Home and County", we ap- plaud their achievements and thank them for their support of Usborne's Ses- quicentennial!
