PAST EVENTS
Lots of fun at Usborne's Pioneer Days
e have had an exciting week at Usborne Central School (April 28 - 30. 1992).
On Tuesday, we celebrated "150" Day. Our class and Mrs. Newton's class worked together to crate a number line to represent each year from 1842
w 1992.
At noon we sang "Happy Birthday to Usborne" and enjoyed 150 cupcakes - 2 sets actually so each student and staff member could have one.
We put together a lovely pioneer mural which each pupil helped to make. We will be entering it in the Kirkton Fall Fail. The pupils all wore lovely pioneer
clothes this week. Our liuerless pioneer lunches were enjoyed by all.
Our one room school house activities were a huge success. Some of the children thought it would be great to go to school in pioneer times while others
were not so sure at all!
Everyone participated enthusiastically in the pioneer demonstration. So much was learned by all.

How - to make ice cream,
use lots of milk, heavy
cream and white sugar -
gelatin to make it thick.
It was interesting! The
ice cream tasted good but
different.
Margaret Hern had lots of
crafts and expensive ones.
She had an old can with
four milkers for the teats.
Maple Syrup
By Lori Richardson
Carl Mills came in to
show us how to tap maple
syrup.
Carl Mills got interested
m maple syrup from his un-
cle who owned a sugar
house when Carl was a kid
and he also loved eating
maple syrup.
Carl also told us the
many tools and equipment
you use for tapping and
malting maple syrup.
Method: drill one or more
holes into a tree and then
drive a metal spout into
each hole. The sap (that is
clear as water) runs through
the spout into a bucket that
hangs from the spoutAfter
all the buckets are filled, a
person unloads it into a
larger bucket. After that the
sap reaches the sugar house
and it is boiled in a long
shallow pan called the
evaporator.
Carl taught the teachers,
helpers and most of the stu-
dents of Usborne Central
School how to tap maple
syrup.
Calligraphy
By Rebecca Hern
Laurel Miner was the pre-
senter of the calligraphy ac-
tivity.
She showed us the art
"Calligraphy" with a foun-
tain pen and a feather.
It was difficult at first but
got easier, w do.
Pioneer Crafts
By Heather Hardeman
Wreath making was a fa-
mous past time of many pi-
oneers.
Mrs. Susan McAllister
and Mrs. Marilyn Hem
were all equipped with
twigs of dogwood and oth-
er things.
Roman umes was when
the wreath making was
started.
Many families used them
for decoration. The wreaths
were often made in spare
time.
When the wreaths were
finished they would deco-
rate them with herbs and
flowers.
Mrs. McAllister an-
swered "1 got interested in
pioneer crafts about 24
years ago." I also learned
how to do wreaths from a
book".
