Old fashioned is best
-stroma-Township is
proud to have the
largest meat abattoir that
specializes in custom kill-
ing and retail in all of Hu-
ron County. in 1979. Ross
Veal and son Mike opened
Veal's Mean. Mike Veal
notes how glad they are to
be in business in Usborne
because he considers the
people of Usbomc enthu-
siastic and supportive.
Mike also considers Veal's
a local industry , because
the meat is produced by lo-
cal farmer:,, a is slaugh-
tered locally and it is sold
by the local market_
Veals sells vanous meas
including beef, pork. larch

wishes of low chloresterol

hopeful to add chicken to
the list
Vcal s traditional ap-
proach to business is seen
in other Usborne businesses
as well. The Kirkton Mar-
ket has undergone ' few
changes since it was con-
structed in 1887. It was
built to serve the people of
the *mounding area as a
general store.
.The present owners Rai
and Wendy Venturin, for-
merly of Sparta. have main-
tained the general store en-
vironment.
The store is located ot.
highway 23 on the south
west boundary of Usborne
1 ownship.
In the 1850's, James Ea
ton. brother of Timothy Ea-
ton. bought one third of an
acre to but 1 a log
close to the creek. Thi
carne the first store in Kirk -
ton The brothers then
moved to SL Marys in 1866
and Timothy on to Toronto
where he became the
founder of the T. Eaton
Company.
The store was known for
its Post Office that was
opened on July 1, 1856 in
the store of Timothy Eaton
It continues to serve Kirk -
ton's residents as a..posial
outlet Like Ross and Mike
Veal, Ray Venturin enjoys
dealing with Usborne resi-
dents who he describes as
outgoing, trustworthy, hon-
est and very active.
To visit Frayne's general
store in Exeter is to have a
unique shopping experi-
ence. An old milk box and
tray of seeds on the porch
along with the 7-Up stocker
on the door are great exam-
ples of the atmosphere pro-
vided by an old -fashioner;
store like Frayne.
The storc owned and
managed by the Stanley
Frayne family was bought
Iron Fredrick Charles
Bcaupre in 1954
The Hay Post Office is
located in their store. It was
the first in Huron County
and is celebrating its 150111
year in service this Octo-
ber.
Dave Frayne still consid-
ers the store a local pioneer
industry. After many years
01 successful business there
have been few changes.
When asked why no major
modernization had oc-
curred he answered that
they want to remain known
as -an old-fashioned country
store.
When our lives reach
apace that can often be too
harried, it is pleasant to do
business in these three plac -
es - where the old-
fashioned way is the best
way.
HistQry of farm equipmeut
Farmers -are "closely knit group"
t is hard to believe
that in the 1800s
farmers would tarn' acres
of land with horses in such
contrast to the technology
of today.
Frank Winters
of Huron Tractor
referred to Us -
borne farmers as
a "closely knit"
group. He also
mentioned that
after being in
business for over
31 years, the equipment
shed has expanded to ten
times the original size. due
to the larger equipment pro-
duced today along with the
increases in quantity. Hyde
Brothers of Hentali. Rus-
seklale Farm Equipment of
Usborne. and Beckers Form
Equipment of Exeter, have
all had dramatic changes in
the size of their original op-
eration as well.
Rtaaseidale Farm Equip-
ment, located on the edge
of Uabane Township, does
approximately loll of their
family -run business in Us -
borne Township. Mildred
Ulch and her husband Rob-
ert feel that the economy
has resulted in neighbours
and family sharing equip-
ment to reduce expenses.
Mildred
also spoke
about the
changes in
the equip-
ment over
the .past
decades.
The changes and modifica-
tions to tires and cabs,
along with specialized
equipment all contribute to
the sophistication of equip-
ment today. There arc
many benefits to the ma-
chinery today including the
reduced time to do the job,
thereby enabling people to
farm much wore Land.
When asked about com-
petition Bill Becker of
Bookers Farm EQUipraent
replied that "competition is
always trough due to the de-
mise in ansate s of farm-
ers." Bill also said that they
are celebrating their sixtieth
anniversary this year and in
the past one third of their
business has been with Us-
borne's dedicated fanners.
Like Beckers, the Hyde
Brothers Farm Equipment
has done 30 percent of their
business in Usborne Town-
ship. Bob Caldwell viewed
competition as tough but
with a bright future because
there will always be a need
for agriculture. he also
commented on people us-
ing more rentals. Hyde
Brothers has two locations:
in Hensall and Rannoch.
Farming has come along
way from horse and oxen to
using high tach specialized
equipment. The long time
partnership between our
area farm equip sit deal-
ers and the farmers of Us -
borne Township is a credit
to the inability of our agri-
cultural oomlatmity and a
hopeful sign for days
ahead.
