WJBL all-stars edge Exeter seniors 5-4
EXETER - Lucan's Cory Burtch
hit a chopping single towards third
base to score the winning run dur-
ing an exhibition baseball game
Wednesday night.
Canada Day meant a lot of cele-
bration for Burtch and the Western
Junior Baseball League all-stars as
they edged the senior Exeter Ex-
press 5-4.
Ron Elliott of the Exeter Express let go with a pitch during
Wednesday night's game against the Western Junior Baseball
League all-stars.

Burtch single, wins It
With the bases loaded in the bot-
tom of the ninth inning, Burtch
scored Godgrich's Brad DeWys.
The score was tied going into the
ninth and the Express had a chance
to go ahead. With one out, short-
stop Bill Glover flied out and Ker-
ry Hedden was tossed out trying to
steal third.
For the Juniors, their strength
was the pitching of Clinton's Neal
Atchison in the later innings and
the consistency of infielders Paul
Smith of Lucan, SL Marys Mark
Vanderschot and Exeter's Steve
Nixon and Mark Russell.
The game also gave the Express
a chance to work on a few things as
the Great Lakes Senior, Baseball
League club started Ron Elliott on
the mound who went three full in-
nings.
It was his first appearance on the
hill and he was replaced by reliev-
ers Paul Elston, Dave Russell, Scot
Davidson and Dave Atthill.
The Express trailed 2-1 heading
into the top of the fourth inning but
Elston, Hedden and Glover all con-
nected with base hits to help their
team build a 4-2 lead.
Cold bats: The Express strug-
gled at the plate Thursday night in
Listowel as they lost their league
game 12-2.
Elliott's seventh inning double
along with singles from D'Arcy
Martin and Barry Baynham were
the only hits the Express could
come up with.
Exeter scored their two runs in
the fifth inning on one Listowel er-
ror, a hits batsman and three walks.
The host team scored one run in
the fourth but exploded in the sixth
with three singles and ahome run
for four runs and added five more
