According to the Concise
Oxford Dictionary, .colour is
the "sensation produced on the
eye by decomposed light
(black is the effect produced
by no light or by the surface
reflecting no rays and white is
the effect of undecomposed
light), or, a particular hue, one,
or any mixture of the constitu-
ents into which light decomposes."
Whatever that means, we enjoy the colours in the world around us, a
beautiful sunset, the trees in autumn, flowers in a summer garden, the
spring green after the long winter. We have also come to use many dif-
ferent colours in our speech, blue blood, green with envy or red tape
(Something I'm sure all of us have been familiar with at one time or an-
other).
The term red tape comes from the fact that in Britain, and elsewhere
I'm sure, official government documents were usually tied up in bun-
dles with a red ribbon. It doesn't take very much imagination to contin-
ue that idea into describing some official's rigid observance of rules
and regulations.
Once in a blue moon means only very rarely. I have heard that a blue
moon is one that occurs in a month when there are two full moons, the
second one being referred to as the blue one: Blue laws are designed to
enforce a certain standard of morality. and are so named because the
original Blue Laws, for the New Haven Colony in Connecticut were
printed on blue paper or bound in bine. They were extremely stringent,
and many have included laws about kissing children on the Sabbath
and the shape a man's haircut should be.
In Thailand, a white elephant could only be ridden or used by the
king. If he wished to ruin one of his courtiers, he would often give him
a white elephant. The unfortunate person was forced to feed and care
for this animal ata huge cost, and was tumble to recoup any of his loss-
es by putting the animal to work. Hence. today, a white elephant be-
comes something which costs a great deal but is useless. A government
white paper derives its name from the fact that the British government
used to prepare these quickly. and there was no time to put the official
blue cover on it.
The black market is one in which goods are sold or traded in viola-
tion of government regulations. It is illegal. Black marketeers deal in
secret. The -grey market is on which sells the same kinds of good, but
manages to stay just within the law.
For those of you who are in the process of redecorating your houses,
here are some points to remember:
• Avoid painting your kitchen or bedroom red, as red has a tendency
to stimulate.yourappetiie far.food.and other.things
• Peach is a good colour for the bathroom. as it is kind to a complex-
ion. Stay away from yellow. (I wish I had known that a couple of years
ago!)
• Pink is relaxing for about five minutes and then it may make you
very uncomfortable
• Blue is relaxing and warm
• Yellow stimulates the memory, which is one reason for yellow legal
pads and those yellow stick-up reminder notes
During the summer weather, salads are always nice to have for din-
ner. One I like is a yellow vegetable trio.
