Times Advocate, 1992-07-01, Page 22ABCA signs contracts
for grass cutting at
Conservation Ares
EXETER -The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority are say-
ing that you shouldn't be surprised if at your next visit to a local con-
servation area, yews= one. of yotu.neighbours cutting the grass.
In order to cut the costs of maintaining sosne.of .the smaller corner=
vation areas. die ABCA has signed maintenance contracts with some
local citizens. The ABCA say that one of the main expenses they in-
curred in maintaining the parks was the cost of mileage from either
the Exeter or Parkhill workshops to the conservation areas.
For example. the Loran Conservation Area, west of the village,
will be maintained by Jeff Keats and Elizabeth Tanner Keats. Simi
lar contracts have been signed for the Clinton, Port Blake and Thed-
ford Conservation Areas.
Because the people maintaining the parks live close to them, the
ABCA hopes that there may be a reduction in vandalism at the con-
servation areas. another maintenance expense.
The Authority also notes that Stephen Township has been main-
taining the Crediton park for a number of years. as has Zurich with
the Zurich Conarrvation.Area.
Costly maintenance of the smaller conservation areas, especially
grass cutting. had threatened to close some of those paries. Mainte- -
nance is one of those items not subsidized by the province but is
borne solely on the municipal levy. The ARCA is hoping cost
.culting.clnttracts like the, above will help keep these areas open to
the public in the future.

And, petltapa we take tome vicarious pleasere-When it happens to the rich
and -famous. Royalty watchers told usthe reference in Osten Elitrlieth's
1992 New Year Message - when she promised to tarry on her Regal duties for
many years to conte - was meant to end speculation she might step aside and
allow Prbhce Charles to amend the throne. By implication the -will live in his
mother's shadow for the foreseeable entre.
`Rehouse the Bible records history it also records instanees of ane biblical
character Living in the shadow of another. But, you newer' get the sense (no
matter how 'hard you look for it) Joshua felt he lived in the shadow of Moses.
There are approximately 10 references to Joshua in Exodos,'Ntmlbers and
Deuteireany - three books dominated by the life of Moses. But Joshua does
get his own book - and the references in the three biblicelbooks mentioned
involve dgnff sen and seminal everts m Israelite history.
Joshua's relationship to Moses did not involve living in Moses' shadow."
Rather, it resembled the traditional mentoring system - whereby an adder per-
son prepares/grootns/advises a younger protege. Our society is not as familiar
with this system - although in recent years it has been somewhat artificially
encouraged within the business and professional worlds.
Lookktg back at the relationship between Mose'and Joshua we note Moses
gave an express command that after he had died and the Israelites were in the
panned Land they were to go to Mount ebal and Mourn Oerizim.
On Mt. Boal Joshua was to build an alter and remind the people of their re-
lationship to God In a very striking fashion the people were confronted with
the law. This covenant renewal - this Old Testament worship *mice - in-
volved everyone. Not only the elders, officer and judges - but also the chil-
dren, women and aliens who lived among them
While Joshua is on Mown Ebel we hear echoes of the past We hear echoes
of the Ten Commandments and the Laws concerning worship. But the echo is
not a perfect reproduction - it has been changed/ altered! It is not Moses
speaking - it is Joshua. It is not on Mount Sinai - it is on Mount Ebal.
Even the Israelites - who originally received The Covenant and who lived
and breathed The Covenant - could not stop the passage of time - and so they
could not stop change.
The Christian church acknowledges, and at times embraces, its Jewish foo-
tage. We also have 2,000 years of our own history to explain and deal with
There have been times we have allowed all this past to weigh us down - to
prevent us from being a Church. of the n
present and future. But not always.
Sometimes the church leads the way for
changes that itnprove the quality and
egtatity of people's lives.
My last comment involves two obser-
vations regarding Joshua on Mount
Ebel. Fast - when Joshua conducted
this worship service the congregation
was very inclusive. Even the strangers
among the Israelites were pan of the as-
sembly who heard God's word that day.
Second - not very far from where Josh-
ua built his akar Abraham built an alter
in recognition of his personal relation-
_ ship with God.
Since the Genesis of creation it has
been God's desire to have that personal
relationship with every one of us.
