night's game against visiting St. Columban. Exeter lost 4-1.
Under -,17 team for boys and girls
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - Katie Armstrong and Mark Foster play
soccer. So do a lot of boys and girls, but these two are
on the same team.
They are members of the Exeter under -17 team
which plays in the Lucan and District Soccer League.
Girls and boys playing on the same team is uQally a
rarity. Occasionaly they may compete against each
other in individual sports but along side each other on
the same team does not happen very often.
But they get along and they play to win.
Wednesday night the Exeter team wok on St. Co-
lumban I, but it was the visitors, after leading 2-0 at
the half, coming away with a 4-1 win. Souban Inlakha-
na scored the Ione Exeter goal.
This was a very physical game with several alterca-
tions between coaches, players and spectators.
. Mark Foster, captain of the Exeter team said, "it's
different from what I'm used to playing."
He said during the game, the St. Columban goalie
yelled something out that sounded, like "get a man."
and one of the girls from Exeter simply said, • "I'm a
woman."
There are a lot of players on the Exeter team and at
times, there are as many as a dozen on the sidelines
watching. Some of them girls, some of them boys.
"'They keep to themselves but they are treated well,..
said Foster.
Other than the odd comment from the opposition,
Foster said the girls seem to be geeing equal treatment
from coaches and the players.
"I haven't noticed them getting picked on."
Armstrong is a very competitive person, she ,plays
ringeue in the winter and in the summer trades her
skates in for soccer spikes.
"I like it, its more competitive," she said of playing
with the boys.
During Wednesday's game, when all the rough stuff
started, Armstrong said she just stood back.
"I just kind of ignore it. I'm used to it in.ringeue."
WLile'tbere are not enough teenage -girls to make up
a team, perhaps in the next couple of years they could
form their own club.
"There are a lot of girls playing this year," said Arm -
fig.
