Senior -Ieagtie depends on more teams
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - The stands are empty.
Players sit huddled in die dugout
trying to escape the tight drizzle.
Batters are oftat walked and
there are more errors committed
than many like to remanber.
This is senior baseball.
Not the London Majors version
where they travel to Kitchener and
Stratford where the smell of hot
dogs and the cheer of the fans
sprinkle the air.
No, this is the home grown ver-
sion. .
The Exeter Express continue
year -after -year to field a team.
They win some, they lose some,
but it is apparent they are out there
to have fun.
At the beginning of the 1992 sea-
son, Seaforth announced they
would not field a team. A couple of
weeks ago, the Kincardine entry in
the Great Lakes Senior Baseball
League packed it in.
What is happening to the league
that is new down to just five clubs?
"Seaforth folded I think, because
of lack of success," said Exeter
manager Joe Fulop. He added Kin-
cardine decided to stop operations
because of all the travelling.
Seaforth's toss was Exeter's gain
as first baseman Rick Boone who
also does some pitching, is now
, wearing an Express uniform.
Other teams in the league besides
the local Express are London,
Lakeside, Strathroy and Listowel.
The Western Junior Baseball
League has seven teams including
ver strong programs in Exeter,
Lucan, Goderich and St. Marys.
The latter three could be possible
entries into the senior circuit.
"Wei hoping more teams will
come out of it," said Fulop. "If you
have more teams closer together,
it's better. There is Less travelling."
Fulop resigned as the Exeter field
skipper last fall because he said the
commitment was not there amongst
the players. But after rethinking
Hern hits two -run homer
LONDON - Catcher Kevin
Hem connected with a two -run
homer to help the Exeter Ex-
press to a 5-4 win over Erindale
at the Laki.side Baseball Tourna-
ment on the weekend.
The celebration was short
lived for the Express who lost
their second game 5-4 to Coru-
na.
Against Erindale, Hern went
2 -for -3 as he clubbed a single in
the second 'inning and blasted
the two -run homer in the sixth
which scored Rick Boone.
Walt Parkinson had a double
and a single.
Coruna 5, Express 4
The score was switched in this
one with the Express coming up
short in a one -ran contest.
Exeter struggled at the plate as
they struck out 13 times but
their offense did get rolling in
the seventh when Kerry Hed-
den, Barry Baynham, and Doug
Schade all had hits and they
plated four runs.
Express 11, Listowel 9
In Great Lakes Senior Base-
ball League action last Tuesday
night in Exeter, the host Express
scored five nms in the first in-
ning and had a big four -run
fourth.
Leading the hit parade was
Rob Dickey with a pair of hits
while Bill Glover connected
with a second inning triple.
Next league action for the Ex-
press,
xpress, who have won three in a
row since the Tillsonburg tour-
nament is Thursday when they
travel to Listowel.
Burtch hits grand siam
LUCAN - Cory Burtch connected
with a grand slam lathe bottom of
the seventh iatoia& to give hoar Lu -
can a 6-4 win in Western Junior
Baseball League action Thursday
night.
The win gives Lucan a 10-2
record, second behind leading
Goderich who are undefeated
through 11 starts. The two teams
were scheduled to meet Monday
night.
Exeter opened the scoring in the
top of the third when they com-
bined three hits and a Lucan miscue
for two runs. The hosts replied with
a run when Brett Revington singled
haute Bsad Coughlin.
hum tied the game in their half
of the fourth when Mau Munro sin-
gled home a leadoff walk to Steve
Dame.
The visitors tallied two in the top
of the fifth on a single, a walk a
fielders' choice and another Lucan
error.
Greg Boshart started on the
mound for Lucan allowing just four
hits before giving way to Munro.
France's bat hot
PETROLIA - Exeter bantams
travelled to Petrolia on the week-
end to take part m a baseball tow-
nsman, winning twig and losing
one game.
They opened with a 7-6 win over
Cotton, despite trailing 5-1 early in
the game.
Andy Glavin bad a pair of singles
to spark the offense while defen-
sively, second baseman Adam Dor-
sky made an extended catch off a
hot line shot.

Exeter 8, Tilsonburg 4
Again trailing. Exeter battled
back to double Tillaonburg. After
starter Andy .Glavin got -in-trouble
early, Daryl Hartman came on and
snuck out five while allowing just
one run.
First baseman Aaron Bayer had
to leave the game after being
spiked in the foot.
Coruna 13, Exeter 4
Exeter sent three pitchers to the
mound as Glavin, France and Scott
Rowe all struggled.
France was once again hot at the
plate with a single and another
triple. The bases were loaded as he
just missed a grand slant by inches.
over the winter, he was on the dia-
mond this spring.
"It seems to me the attitude is the
best in years."
Strong nucleus: The Express has
a very strong -nucleus of returning
players including Marty Merner,
Barry Baynham, Walter Parkinson,
Rob Dickey, Kevin Hern, D'arcy
Marin, Kerry Hedden, Doug
Schade, Brian Rivard, Kevin Drag-
er, Paul Elston, Dave Atthill and
Paul Gilmour.
This_, year, Fulop, along with
coach Doug Fairbairn and general
manager Gar Penhale, has 22
players inked.
Dickey, an Express second base-
man, has been playing baseball for
17 years now. Prior to coming to
the Exeter club, he was with the
Dashwood senior entry, the Tigers.
He echoed Fulop's comments
about the attitude of the 1992 Ex-
press.
"It's the best I've played with. It's
a good blend," he added of the
younger players mixed in with the
seasoned veterans.
The Express have used the Exeter
Co-op Juniors as their feeder team
for years.
Dickey said he hopes to see other
entries into the league but right
now, the travelling to the same
towns to play -isn't that bid.
1 don't think people Mind travel-
ling. You just have to play the same
teams more often."
Baynham plays the hot corner,
third base, and he won't be too sur-
prised if the programs in Goderich,
Lucan and St. Marys strive *to enter
teams in the senior league.
He seems pleased with the 1992
Express.
"We have lots of players. Hard-
ball seems to be picking up around
here," he noted.
"There are more kids playing mi-
nor ball."
Baynham said the towns north of
this area don't seem to be as inter-
ested as those around here.
He played for the Express for
several years before leaving to play
in Dashwood and then switched
over to fastball before rejoining the
Express.
There is a large banner hanging
in the lobby of the South Huron
Recreation Centre in Exeter which
states the Express were Ontario
Baseball Association 'D' champions
in both 1986 and in 1988.
As Baynham says, "it's some-
thing to strive for."
Hopefully building the local
league up will also be something to
strive for.
