Stephen residents come together to

A visitor from Germany, Dr.
Gerhard Wein presented a plaque
on behalf of the community of
Baiersbronn in Germany where
many present Stephen residents
originated from. Wein also re-
planted a tree with reeve Tomes as
a bond between the two countries.
The tree was dedicated by Rev. Fa-
ther Bogauo of the Mount Carmel
parish.
A week earlier. Mrs. Marguerite
Finkbeiner of Crediton was in
Baierabronn presenting a similar
plaque and planting a tree as pan of
their 700th anniversary.
The author of the recently pub-
lished Stephen Township history
book, Muriel Mack was in atten-
dance. Two special editor auto-
graphed copies of the history book
were sold by auctioneers Bob Hey-
wood and Jack Riddell. They were
purchased by Joe and Dianne Kaak
for $360 and reeve Tomes for
$300.
Presidents of the Crediton, Dash-
wood and Grand Bend Women's In-
stitutes presented a historical wall
hanging to township council. It
contains blocks with each depicting
one aspect of the township's history
arranged around a large centre
block showing the township crest.
Saturday afternoon entertainment
included the Dykehoppers band and
Dutch dancers and the Barnardo
Karate Academy along with a va-
riety of sports for the youngsters.
Saturday evening appetites of
more than 500 were taken care of
by a Shrine's fish fry and the eve-
ning concluded with the Crysta-
laires supplying music for a dance.
Sunday's program started with an
ecumenical church service. The
guest speaker was Ross Daily of
CFPL TV. Solos were sung by Ro-
berta Walker and Anne -Marie
Hoffman. Doug Lewis was at the
keyboard and Bob Heywood pro-
vided accordion music.
Offering from the church service,
in excess of $800, will be donated
to the Huron County Christmas Bu-
reau.
Following the church service, the
Stephen firemen again provided a
combination of breakfast and lunch
with close to 500 participating. A
total of 100 dozen eggs was used.
Sunday afternoon's activities
were highlighted by a grudge slo-
pitch game between the Stephen
Cuties and Team 10 of London.
The Curies, alias the local firemen
arrived and left in a roar of glory
and sirens aboard two fue vehicles.
The game ended gaickly during
one of many fiascos as the Curies
fled quickly on the fire vehicles and
Team 10 vfas "left in left field."
Throughout the weekend visitors
to Crediton and there were many,
enjoyed viewing exceptional dis-
plays and pictures of township his-
tory at the community centre and
individual township church dis-
plays at the Crediton United
Church.
At the community hall display ar-

en's Institutes , one visitor was
heard to say,"This looks just like a
museum."
Traffic into Crediton was heavy
throughout the weekend. One life-
long resident said, "That's the larg-
est number of cars I have ever seen
in the village at one time."
The Crediton Optimist club oper-
ated a food booth during the three
day weekend.
The winner of the draw for a trip
to Las Vegas sponsored by Ellison
Travel and Key Tours was John
Morrissey, a former reeve and war-
den. The Sesquicentennial commit-
tee added $400 in cath to the prize.
