From our
kitchen to yours
By T.A. ghost writer Heavenly Devine
There has been a rock
opera written about it and
it has been called a wom-
an's crowning glory. Hair.
I didn't realize there were
so many interesting facts
about it. I don't know if
there is any truth to the
idea put forth by my
Grandfather that his hair
only grew properly if he had his hair cut on the new moon, or
the other one which is constantly thrown around about blondes
• having more fun.
Did you know:
* Hair texture is determined by the shape of the hair. Straight
hair has a round shape, wavy and curly hair is flat: Tete flattest
hair is the waviest and curliest.
* The shape of the hair follicles (the places where the hair
grows on the skin) will determine whether hair is curly or
straight: a round follicle will -produce straight hair, an oval one
will produce wavy hair and an elliptical one will produce curly
hair.
* "Goose bumps" are caused by muscles contracting around
the hair when you are cold or frightened.
* Human scalp hair will normally grow for two to six years.
Then it is "shed" as a new hair grows out of the follicle. This is
the reason that hair seems to stop growing at a certain length.
Those people who have very long hair are abnormal as they
seem to have only a growing phase for their hair, and no rest-
ing phase.
* Humans "shed" 70-100 hairs per day.
* On average there are 200 hairs in each square centimetre of
sc*1Scalp hair grows about 1/2 centimetre per month
* Shorter hair such as eyelashes have a shorter growing peri-
od.
* Blonde beards grow faster than other ones, and the average
man spends about 145 days of his life shaving his face.
* Hair grows faster on children.
* Hair grows faster in the summer.
* Baldness occurs when the hair follicles die and no longer
produce new hair.
* Blondes, on average, have more hair on their heads than
brunettes, who, in tum, have more hair than redheads.
The following recipe bears no relationship to hair whatsoev-
er! It will not put hair on your chest, nor will it give you curly
hair, nor is it a cure for baldness. It is simply the best recipe I
have ever found for bean salad.
Bean Salad
Combine:
1 tin green beans
1 tin yellow beans All of these quantities can be
1 tin lima beans adjusted to suit the taste of
1 tin kidney beans your family.
1 tin chick peas
chopped green pepper to taste
chopped onion to taste
Mix and pour over the beans:
12 cup oil '
l/2 cup vinegar
3/4 cup sugar
salt and pepper to taste.
Allow to stand refrigerated overnight.
Dashwood Womens institute
holds local car rally
DASHWOOD - On June 2 the
Dashwood Women's Institute meet-
ing opened with a car rally in the
local area. The roll call was a sign
or name noticed on your journey.
A "Thank you" letter was read
from Mildred Kellerman. Members
signed a get well card for Aldene
Wolfe.
New programs for the coming
year were given.
The members then enacted a skit
"A modern version of Little Red
Hen."
Coming events were discussed -
Crediton's Homecoming June 27,
28, the District Picnic July 8, and
the London Area Convention Octo-
ber 14 in Ailsa Craig.
The rest of the evening was spent
playing picnic style games.
Cart Mills, an Exeter resident, took top spot in the •Boniest
Knees" contest at the Gatlinburg Highland Games in Gatlin-
burg, Tennessee recently. Mills out 'kneed' the other 26 com-
petitors to take the honours. In this photo one of the blind
folded judges assesses his knees.
