EXETER - One day before the
annual South Hum District High
School formal, the Exeter Chief of
Police brought a group of students
some reminders about drinking and
driving.
On Thursday, Jack Harkness told
the Grade I1 students, that pro-
grams they are .involved in, like
Ontario Students Against Impaired
Driving (OSAID), are making a dif-
ference.
He said the number of alcohol re-
lated accidents in Hurst County
arc significantly being reduced.
"A lot of positive things have
been done that your parents and
grand parents did not do in Huron
County," said Harkness.
He said the OSAID pre rani,
which is supervised at South sterna
by Carey Eddy is suouseat al,
"You begin to realise Ih*n' Is
hope for the future."
Harkness said an impelred ih .. ret
is 25 times more danrm,sst than 1
sober one.
While the penalties lot drinking
and driving are well enfowed ire
Canada, they don't scant to be as
severe as those in other countries.
"In Bulgaria, they don't have a lot
of second offenders because there,
they face execution." Harkneas ex-
plained that too much alcohol
clouds a persons judgement.
It make it difficult to judge dis-
tanoe of both moving and station-
ary objects. 'Mt ability for the eyes
to recover from glare is changed
and bating objects to the side are
difficult to see.
"What is too much?," he asked
the students of how much alcohol is
needed before a person is impaired.
"1 can't answer that and I was a
breathalayzer technician."
He explained it depends on sever-
al things, like the person's mood•
how much sleep they have had, and
the group they are with.
Harkness gave several tips to the
students including telling them that
drinking coffee does not help mini-
mize the affects of alcohol. Neither
docs waiting before driving.
However, drinking to what is
your "safe limit", using a designat-
ed driver and drinking water or soft
drinks be(are alcoholic drinks are
game suggestions which will pre-
vent drinking and driving acci-
dents.
He cautioned those who may
think, "exotic drinks" and punches
tar disguised drinks are not harmfuL
"ilroy still have alcohol. The next
thing you know, you have two poo-
l* who shouldn't be behind the
wheel.
In his closing remark, Harkness
said to the students, "Think before
you drink, and if you drink, we pre-
fer you don't drive."
