THOMAS - Steven Gei- ger may only be in Grade Nine, but he's making a lot of high schools take notice. The Zurich native, who at- tends Goderich High School, finished second at the OFSAA west regional track and field meet in the midget boys' 400 metres race. That has gained him a berth in this weekend's provincial cham- pionships to be held at York University in Toronto. An overall athlete who excels in hockey, western riding and volleyball, Geiger clocked a 52.8 just behind Jeff Schleifer of Windsor St. Joescph's with a 51.6. t3eigcr's time was much better than his 53.7 at WOSSA where he was second and his winning time of 55.2 at the Huron -Perth meet. "There is more competition and the guys arc pushing hard- er," said Geiger in the difference between the tneets. "They're faster so you have to go faster to keep up with the pack." At the regionals at Parkside in St. Thomas on Friday, he was once again started in Lane Five which means he has to be amongst the leaders coming into the final turn. "I've been starting out as hard as I can. There was a wind going with me on the back straight. I didn't have to use much energy." Four Panthers qualify: A year ago, Exeter's South Huron District High School sent three athletes to the OFSAA meet. This year the number has swelled to four, including a couple of new faces. At the regional meet, Danielle Miner finished third in the mid- get girls' javelin event with a toss of 28.14 metres. In the two previous meets, Miner has thrown distances of 27.50 and 27.66 metres. Another newcomer to the pro- vincial meet will be Jeremy Horne. Although he was fourth at the -Huron -Perth meet, Horne has excelled and at the region- als, cleared the high jump bar at 1.75 metres to finish third in the midget boys' division. Randy Johnson is no stranger to OFSAA competition. Last Randy Johnson year he brought home a bronze medal, this year he is searching for gold. In the junior boys' division, Johnson, the overall winner in his division at the 'Huron -Perth meet, tossed the javelin 53.80 metres for a second place perfor- mance. The fourth member of the Pan- ther team heading to OFSAA is speedster Molly McClure. She is running very consistent as she was third in the 200 me- tres with a time of 26.3 seconds. At WOSSA, McClure clocked a 26.5. In her new event, the 300 metre hurdles, McClure was fourth at 46.7 seconds which is very close to her 46.8 at the pre- vious meet. In addition to North Middlesex, Hagarsville will enter the Develop- ment League circuit in the southern division while the Paris Mounties have made the move to Junior 'C'. Initially, there was thought to hav- ing new teams pay a $5,000 entry fee, but the idea was abandoned at a recent league meeting. 265 253 275 518 514 459 452 446 Teams Wanted for Exeter Mohawks Co-ed Slo Pitch Tournament June 12-14 Coor Qualifier For more information contact: Bill Soidan Work 262-2600, Home 235-1561 DUBLIN - Pitcher Carol Wind- sor provided both the offense and the defense Thursday night to lead Creditors to an 11-2 win over host Dublin Thursday night. . Last Tuesday, they lost their fust regular season of the game, a 5-3 decision to the host St. Marys Nighthawks. The next night in Mitchell they came up short in a 1- 0 decision to the Mets. "The Nighthawks are a team we should beat. You are not going to win too many games if you wait until the eighth inning to hit the ball," said veteran shortstop Dan Heywood. Thursday, Exeter bounced back as pitcher Doug Charlton fanned 14 en route to a 3-0 shutout win over the visiting Mitchell Gladia- tors. Exeter's offense began very early when they managed to get a run in the first inning. Heywood led off with a single, moved to second when Darren Neil got on due to an error and it was 1- 0 when Charlton connected with a base hit. Charlton and Heywood lead the club with seven hits each into the early weeks of the season. "I'm having trouble with the in- side pitch,' said Heywood. There was no scoring again until the bottom of the eighth when Sandy Hyde led off with a walk, stole second and third and both he and Neil scored on Charlton's dou- ble. "We put too much pressure on • ourselves. We have a tendency to get in a lull." Defensively, Imperials' first base- man Kevin Lightfoot made a nice back handed grab and Chris Kun- der, moving to shortstop to replace Heywood, made an outstanding leaping catch in the ninth inning. Catcher Jim Lewis did a good job behind the plate. "We've got young talent and vet- erans, it's a good blend. Us guys who have been in the league a few years, we get tired of playing every day," said Heywood. Mets 1, Imperials 0 This is the only gama Exeter could not come up with a run. They came very close in the sec- ond inning when third baseman Steve Neil walked, moved on a Mike Desjardine single and the bases were loaded after Mike Neil reached first on an error. But with two out, Rod Johnston grounded to the second baseman. The Imperials struggled at the plate all night as they had only four hits. Besides Desjardine, Lightfoot had a third inning double, Graham Nesbitt clubbed a double in the ninth and Darren Neil singled in the fifth frame.
